Biological Field Technician – San Angelo, TX
Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a part-time, experienced bilogical technician near San Angelo, Texas. WEST is seeking a biological technician for fieldwork that will require long days in a range of temperatures. Candidates must be comfortable with hazards typical of conducting ground-based biological surveys in the local environment (e.g., sharp vegetation, dust, extreme heat and cold). Work is part-time (approximately 10 days per month, spread throughout the month) and requires availability throughout daylight hours, sometimes with 12-24 hour notice. Additional field work opportunities may also be available during employment.
This position requires the biological Technician to be based out of or near the town of San Angelo, Texas. Primary responsibilities of this position include conducting standardized fixed-point avian use surveys and bat acoustic monitoring at wind energy development projects, located in the region. Data collection will include use of detailed paper datasheets. Data management as well as some data entry and summary is required. All data collected is confidential to the project.
Field work will entail long hours of walking, standing, bending, etc. in sometimes inclement conditions. The selected wildlife technician will work independently and must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors, including adhering to schedules and providing routine summaries of survey efforts. Job duties may require use of compass, global positioning system devices, Kestrel weather instruments, rangefinder, and digital cameras as well as the ability to maintain equipment. Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job related activities. The selected Wildlife Technician will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST, and will be expected to use good judgment to stay safe and work efficiently. Strong birding skills are required - familiarity specifically with central/west Texas birds is a bonus and will be taken into careful consideration during the hiring process.
The selected biological technician will be provided a work vehicle to conduct field work. Biological technicians may be eligible for housing reimbursement in the event that the Technician is required to relocate from out of state. GPS units, compass, camera, and spotting scope (if necessary) will be provided by WEST, however, biological technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear and appropriate clothing, which includes binoculars for conducting fixed-point count avian surveys. Preference will be given to qualified and local applicants.
Start date: August 2018
Compensation: $12-16/hr DOE
Workload: part-time hours available (approx. 10 days/ month), with some schedule flexibility

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred; however, undergraduates and enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply. Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners. Must be able to maintain equipment. Ability to follow protocol is essential. Good bird identification skills for species in the region, and use of guides and keys for identification are preferred.
Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Skilled use of GPS units, topographic maps, compass, and other field equipment is required.
