Biological Field Technician (s) – Canyon, TX
Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for multiple temporary Biological Field Technicians. Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.
The primary responsibilities of this position are to: 1) monitor for eagle activity at an existing wind energy facility, 2) reduce collision risk when eagles are near turbines, 3) complete fatality searches at wind turbines, and 4) conduct raptor carcass persistence trials at the facility. Duties include following monitoring protocols to collect data, map flight paths, describe eagle behaviors, identify birds, and communicate turbine curtailment orders with the facility operator. Candidates must have previous eagle observation experience and be willing to work long days in a variety of weather conditions. Candidates interested in conducting fatality searches must also be able to walk several miles in a day. Technicians will work independently and must be diligent. Effective communication and coordination with site management and WEST supervisors is essential. Technicians will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST and clients. Work vehicles and field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boot), clothing, and binoculars. A field house will be provided for all field technicians in shared accommodations.
Applicants must be able to cope with windy conditions and winter temperatures as they can be extreme. Experience with 4x4 vehicles is required. Skilled use of topographic maps, GPS units, and other field equipment is required.
The position is for at least 6 but up to 7 months (September – March or April, depending on eagle activity). Work days will include weekends and holidays. The curtailment schedule will be seven days on, seven days off for ~10 hours per day. Four additional workdays per month will be available for the completion of fatality searches. Two rounds of carcass persistence trials will provide additional hours for interested technicians.

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred. Undergraduates, individuals currently seeking degree, and other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply. Good bird identification skills for species in the region, specifically raptors, are required. Must demonstrate ability to work on biological field studies or prior field experience; must be able to work independently and interact positively with project managers, clients, landowners, and others. Candidates experienced in raptor identification/behaviors will be given preference.

Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
