Biological Field Technician Location: Albany and Carbon Counties, Wyoming Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices in 13 states. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data. This unique blend of disciplines and our years of experience in both areas allow us to provide original solutions to a wide range of natural resources issues from inventory to permitting to risk assessment to basic research. WEST provides consulting services to government, industry and other organizations. Description: Primary responsibility of this position is to conduct conducting fixed-point bird surveys at a proposed wind energy facility near Medicine Bow, Wyoming. Additional biological surveys such as bat acoustic monitoring, nest surveys, etc. may be needed in the future that will increase the workload during peak season (spring, summer, and fall). Duties include following standard protocols record bird use year-round. Data collection will include use of detailed paper datasheets. Data management as well as some data entry and summary may be required. Strong birding skills are a must and familiarity with Wyoming birds, especially eagles. Field work will entail long hours of walking, standing, bending, etc. in sometimes inclement conditions. Selected technician will work independently and must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors including adhering to schedules and providing routine summaries of survey efforts. Job duties may require use of compass, global positioning system devices, Kestrel weather instruments, rangefinder, and digital cameras as well as the ability to maintain equipment. Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job related activities. Technician will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST. Technician will be expected to use good judgment to stay safe and work efficiently. Vehicle will be provided for work completion or mileage reimbursed. GPS units, compass, camera, and spotting scope (if necessary) will be provided by WEST, however, technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear and appropriate clothing. Compensation: $14-17 hr DOE Start date: ASAP Duration: September 15, 2017 – March 30, 2018 with the possibility that work will continue longer Workload: Part-time effort (~15-25 hrs/week). Housing is NOT provided; applicants should reside within 1 hour of Medicine Bow, Wyoming.
Qualifications
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree. Undergraduates and other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply. Good bird identification skills for species in the region and use of guides and keys for identification are essential. Must demonstrate ability to work on biological field studies or prior field experience (including bird identification); must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, clients, and landowners. Must be able to maintain equipment. Surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment is required. Job requires the person filling this position to be able to appear for work on time; stand and consciously observe for long periods of time; follow instructions from managers; interact effectively with coworkers and clients; maintain a positive attitude; and to accept guidance and constructive criticism.
