Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a temporary Biological Field Technician. Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.
WEST has an opening for a crew leader position from March 15 October 15 near Lafayette, Indiana. Primary responsibilities of this position include managing field crews that will be conducting standardized fatality searches beneath wind turbines to locate bird and bat fatalities, and conducting bias trials. Successful candidates must be able to work in a remote field setting, be flexible and work on multiple projects, work well both independently and with others, follow field and data entry protocols, and communicate effectively with the client and agency personnel. Job duties require use of compass, Global Positioning System devices, and digital cameras. Training will be provided.
An average workweek may include 30-40 hours, though some positions may require shorter or longer hours some weeks, depending on the project and seasonal workloads. Housing will not be provided. Vehicle will be provided or mileage will be reimbursed. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots or steel-toed boots).

Compensation: $15-17/ per hour DOE

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred. Undergraduates and other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply. Must be able to work independently and in small groups, and interact positively with project managers, clients, landowners, and other technicians. Candidates experienced in leading crews and in bat and bird identification will be given preference.
Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS unit, and other field equipment, is required.
Job requires the person filling this position be able to appear for work on time; to walk for long periods of time; to follow instructions from manager and team leader; to interact effectively with coworkers and clients; to maintain positive attitude; and to accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
