NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Major Duties As a Biological Science Technician (Field Assistant) with the U.S. Geological Survey, Eastern Ecological Science Center at Patuxent Research Refuge (formerly Patuxent Wildlife Research Center), some of your specific duties will include: • Assist scientists in the pen and field research studies when needed (some studies may require IACUC approved termination of animals). • Must have knowledge of basic principles, protocols, methods, and procedures of avian biology in captivity and native habitats. • Skill in operating complex, but typical, avian husbandry (feeding, cleaning, breeding, veterinary care assistance) and laboratory equipment or systems, such as egg incubators and hatchers, balances, pH and other meters, and equipment/systems used in highly experimental and sophisticated laboratory experiments. • Operate a government vehicle. The U.S. Geological Survey has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. Physical Demands: Work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds and can occur sometimes during adverse conditions. Work Environment: The work is performed in a laboratory or field environment. Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to the discomforts of rain, cold/hot weather, and may have pests (mice and snakes). Special safety precautions are required in some cases, and the employee may typically special safety boots, waders, and special organism handling gear. Qualifications

Qualifications In order to qualify at the GG-05 level, you must meet one of the following: --Nine months of field party experience. Field party experience includes activities associated with avian husbandry, collecting and recording biological samples for laboratory analysis in the fields of aviculture, animal behavior, avian reproductive physiology, and/or ornithology; applying accepted data collection techniques and methods in the performance of field work in support of scientific investigations and colony management; and using a variety of scientific instruments to collect data to measure avian egg and body morphometrics, water quality measurements, avian hatching and manipulating quantitative data and database management. Only time actually spent in the field can be credited when qualifying individuals under the field experience option. --OR Three years of sub-professional experience. Sub-professional experience is defined as technical work performed in support of field or laboratory investigations related to aviculture, animal behavior, avian reproductive physiology, and/or ornithological disciplines which provided basic knowledge or skills in avian biology, ecology, and/or husbandry; gathering, recording, and assembling scientific data; using scientific instruments to measure avian egg and body morphometrics, water quality measurements, avian hatching and manipulating quantitative data and database management. Experience may include assisting professional employees with duties such those listed above. Experience as a laboratory technician, veterinary technician or in a trade or craft may be credited as experience when the work was performed in close association with veterinarians, biological scientists or other technical personnel and provided a good working knowledge of appropriate methods, and techniques needed for scientific research goals and objectives on live animals. --OR Three years of college study (equivalent 90 semester/135 quarter hours) plus 3 months of lab or field work experience. Satisfactory completion of a field course of study may be substituted for the 3 months of field and/or laboratory experience.
