The primary responsibilities of the Biological-Ranch Technician will be to assist in natural resource management and day-to-day ranch operations. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Perform wildlife and habitat surveys. • Coordinate and effect habitat management objectives. • Perform general ranch work including wildlife/bison water system development and repair, fencing, and maintenance of ranch buildings. • Safely operate and maintain vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, tractors, heavy equipment, and other powered equipment with various attachments. • Move/Handle bison in a low-stress manner in pastures and corrals. • Use chemicals to assist with weed control. • Use of welder, cutting torch, shop equipment, chainsaw, and hand tools. • Hiking and backpacking over rough terrain. • Participate in ranch safety program and ranch meetings.
To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: • General understanding of the scientific method and ability to design projects, collect data, and disseminate information accordingly. • Willingness to keep an open mind and consider new solutions to old problems; innovative. • Ranching and/or farming experience; applicant must be able to diagnose and perform basic vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance; use a welder and cutting torch; have a basic understanding of rangeland water delivery systems including solar power and pumps. • Ability to read a map and operate a GPS. • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations; works well alone. • Balances team and individual responsibilities; exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views; gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to building a positive team spirit; puts success of team above own interests. • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment. • Demonstrates persistence and overcomes obstacles; takes calculated risks to accomplish goals. • Reacts well under pressure; accepts responsibility for own actions; follows through on commitments. • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote efficiency and quality. • Observes safety and security procedures; reports potentially unsafe conditions; uses equipment and materials properly. • Follows instructions, responds to management direction; takes responsibility for own actions; commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals; completes tasks on time or notifies supervisor with an alternate plan. • Willingness to work outdoors under potentially inclement conditions. • Willingness to live in a remote location.
