Open Positions within the
Branch of SSA Science Support
Are you passionate about applied conservation?
Are you excited about helping to inform decisions about federally endangered species?
Do you like using your technical skills and expertise working on teams with policy and species experts?
If you answered yes to these questions, then a position with the Branch of SSA Science Support may be for you!
The US Fish and Wildlife Service Headquarters, Ecological Services Program recently created the Branch of SSA Science Support (BSSS) as part of the Division of Conservation and Classification to provide support to field offices, regional offices and other headquarters staff. We will help lead biologists and core teams with technical and framework support for Species Status Assessments (SSAs) for domestic and foreign species listing decisions. SSAs are biological assessments of species, their habitats, and threats that characterize the species' viability and inform policy decisions and planning. Our framework support work will include developing and providing guidance and trainings, right sizing, rapid prototyping, and to helping to communicate the science of SSAs in ways that are useful and understandable to decision makers. We will also provide technical support by developing and interpreting conceptual, qualitative, and quantitative models. We are looking for people with expertise in Genetics, Climate Science, Decision Science (e.g. Expert Elicitation, Risk Analysis), Population and Demographic Modeling, Biostatistics (e.g., Power Analysis, Low Data Environments), Geospatial Analysis (e.g. Stressor Modeling, Habitat/Land Use Change), Forecasting, and Data Management.
The BSSS will soon be hiring 8 (yes, eight) GS-401-12/13 non-supervisory biologists to fill these scientific support positions. This is a great and unusual opportunity for technically savvy biologists and analysts in the Service and our partners! The link to the USAJOBS announcement is available with more details on the application process, and the application period will run from Wednesday, Feb. 24 to Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2021. These staff positions will be location negotiable, and we intended for the selected individuals to remain at Service field, regional, or headquarters offices or be strategically co-located with our partners. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are using Direct Hire Authority (DHA) to fill this position via a bundled hire for all 8 positions. That is, everyone applies together and all applicants who meet the minimum requirements are referred. Unless someone is eligible for CTAP/ICTAP (displaced federal employees) consideration, applicants will apply under the Public option, even if they're a current federal employee.
