WEST was founded in 1990, and over the last 26 years has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data. This unique blend of disciplines and our years of experience allow us to provide original solutions to a wide range of natural resource issues from population estimation to damage assessments, estimation of risk, and cutting-edge research. WEST provides consulting services to government, industry and other organizations.
Our Biometricians work individually, or with teams of natural resource specialists, scientists, and other biometricians to:
Develop study designs, write field data collection protocols, and design databases and data quality checks
Extract and format data from many sources for analysis, develop and apply statistical methods, program analyses primarily in R, and interpret and present results at meetings and in reports for clients and manuscripts for publication Participate in developing project budgets and proposals
Assist on a wide variety of projects
Provide critical review of analyses and reports and advise other statisticians on various projects
Maintain positive relationships with coworkers, clients and stakeholders
The Biometrician we are seeking has a great opportunity to help WEST take the next step in our growth as a full service environmental consulting firm. The successful candidate will have:
MS in statistics or a related field, with interest in and experience as an applied statistician in the areas of ecology, fisheries or wildlife research
o Possess a fundamental understanding of statistics
o Ability to write proposals, manage deadlines, and collaborate with others.
o Preference will be given to those with experience in the following analytical techniques: generalized linear modeling, bootstrapping and simulation, spatial analysis, Bayesian hierarchical modeling and survival analysis
Experience with statistical software
o Preference will be given to those with experience in R. Experience with SQL Server, data management, and geographical information systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) is a plus
• Experience with statistical consulting
o Preference will be given to those with 2 to 4 years of experience
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines
• Ability to effectively use MS office applications
The successful candidate must be a self-starter who enjoys research, communicating and interacting with people (both co-workers and clients), and preferably has experience in field data collection. Additionally, the successful candidate should enjoy learning new analytical techniques to solve challenging problems and developing programs for management and analyses of natural resource data.
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.
