The Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program (SHARP) is looking for BIRD BANDERS and NEST SEARCHERS to conduct tidal marsh bird research on multiple stationary demographic crews along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts.
SHARP is a collaborative group of researchers studying tidal marsh bird ecology and conservation across the Northeast (www.tidalmarshbirds.org) with emphasis placed on Saltmarsh Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, Willet and Clapper Rail. The work will occur in conjunction with biologists at numerous National Wildlife Refuges and state and private lands.
Demographic Field Technicians:
Technicians will conduct nest searching, mist-netting, banding, and vegetation surveys for Saltmarsh Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow and Seaside Sparrow. Positions are available in multiple locations along the coast from Maine to Virginia; placement will be based on experience and order of application.
Housing and vehicles will be provided for all positions.
All work will be conducted with strict adherence to COVID-related guidelines set in place by SHARP as well as state and federal regulations.
Positions begin April – June 2021 and conclude mid/late August 2021; exact dates are crew/placement dependent.
Ideal applicants will have previous grassland nest searching experience and/or sufficient mist-netting and blood sampling (via the brachial vein) experience to operate independently, be self-motivated and physically fit, have a positive attitude, and work well as part of a team
Technicians should anticipate working long days in challenging field conditions and are expected to have strong organizational skills, a valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record, and an undying love (or at least tolerance) of mud, bugs, and the soul-cleansing fires of fieldwork.
Salary ranges from $480 to $600 per week, depending on experience.
