Description
Western Oklahoma has seen an increase in black bear observations and bear-human conflict reports. It is unclear if bears occurring in the Oklahoma panhandle constitute a resident population or transient individuals dispersing from neighboring states. A noninvasive study is being conducted to evaluate space use patterns and population genetics of black bears in the Oklahoma Panhandle. One (1) field technician is being hired to assist an M.S. student with non-invasive camera trapping, genetic sampling (hair snares), habitat sampling, and data processing and management for Summer 2023 season (May-August). Communicating with Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation employees and private landowners will be an important component of the position. Work can involve long hours in hot, windy, and buggy/snake conditions and in a remote location. Shared housing is provided at Black Mesa State Park.
Qualifications
Qualifications: 1. Progress towards a bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, biology, ecology, or closely related field. 2. Ability to lift and carry over 50 pounds and hike over rocky, steep, and rough terrain in remote locations. 3. Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license and the ability to safely drive a 4WD vehicle through rugged conditions. 4. Demonstrated ability to communicate well with coworkers, supervisor, ODWC personnel, and private landowners. 5. Ability to maintain a positive and mature attitude and good sense of humor. Previous field experience with camera trapping is preferred, but not required. Technicians must be available early-May through late-August.
