Title: Wild Horse & Burro Intern (1 position) Start/End Date: September 9, 2019 – January 3, 2020 (anticipated) Stipend: $500/week (+Education Award) Term: 17 weeks Reports To: BLM Wild Horse & Burro Specialist Location: Kingman, Arizona – Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Status: 675-hour AmeriCorps Service Term Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $2,255.24; Public Lands Corps Certificate*; both with successful completion of the internship. Summary: Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC): Arizona Conservation Corps, a program of Conservation Legacy, aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. AZCC is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with conservation service work projects on public lands. AZCC operates programs across Arizona that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff and Tucson. Position Summary: The Wild Horse and Burro Internship is designed to provide a professional development opportunity to learn about wild horse and burro management with the BLM. The intern will have an opportunity to transition from an academic to a professional work environment by assisting with range conservation, data collection and preparation, and management planning on public lands. The Kingman BLM Field Office oversees approximately 2.4 million acres of Public Lands in northwestern Arizona and is home to the historic Route 66 National Back Country Byway and the largest wild burro population in the country. The BLM is responsible for multiple use management of resources including portions of the Sonoran, Mohave, and Great Basin Deserts. The Field Office manages nine wilderness areas, twelve areas of Critical Environmental Concern, and five river segments under consideration for Wild and Scenic River designations. The Kingman Field Office does not have available housing. Interns must provide their own personal transportation to and from the duty office. Essential Responsibilities and Functions: • Assist the Wild Horse and Burro Specialist with daily duties, such as gathering, sorting, loading, transporting and adopting wild horses and burros. • Conduct vegetation monitoring and inventory range conditions. • Establish and interpret range utilization and trend studies. • Gather data; prepare, organize, and maintain Excel spreadsheets and/or databases. • Assist with preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents. • Participate in development of plans and programs for land management by collecting data for grazing allotment plans, identifying what improvements are needed, and what management practices can be affected. • Obtain required measurements, record information concerning forage density, production and types, vigor, rate of growth, soil depth, compaction and erosion. • Analyze and evaluate condition and trend data using available guidelines and standards. Determine the upward, downward, or stability of trends of range and soil conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: • Experience with geographic information system (GIS) technologies and global positioning systems (GPS). • Ability to cooperate and exercise judgment with land users and visitors, and to report range land violations in a professional manner. • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment. • The ability to conduct field work in a remote, rugged, desert environment. • Applicants must pass a DOI security background check and should possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Preferred Qualifications: • Undergraduate degree in biology, range management, or a related discipline. • Previous experience with a Corps or youth serving organization. • Knowledge of the theories, principles and concepts related to the ecological behavior of grasslands, pasture lands, shrub lands, riparian areas, deserts, and meadows. Knowledge and understanding of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). • Experience working in natural resource conservation. Physical Requirements: • To successfully perform essential functions, the individual is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, etc. May be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and be able to safely lift 50 pounds on a routine basis. • Must be able to drive a 4x4 and off-highway vehicle on remote, primitive, unmaintained dirt roads, loaded with equipment or materials, while continually assessing staff and equipment safety during work shift. • Must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, computer, reach with hands and arms, use hand tools. • Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Participant Essential Eligibility Requirements: Participation and Expedition Behavior: • Work effectively as a member of a team despite potentially stressful and difficult conditions. This may require problem solving on an interpersonal or group level as well as a willingness to accept differences. • Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of others for any reason. • Willingness and ability to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training, and national service. • Effectively communicate ideas and concerns as they arise directly to supervisors, colleagues, and organization staff. • Appropriately represent Arizona Conservation Corps, the BLM and AmeriCorps to the public and partners at all times. • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment. Safety and Judgment: • Effectively communicate danger to others in the form of either a warning of danger others may be encountering or a notification of personal distress, injury or need for assistance. Must be able to do so at a distance of up to 50 meters and in conditions with limited visibility or loud background noise such as darkness or high winds. • Effectively perceive and understand significant and apparent hazards and follow direction by others so that you will be able to successfully execute techniques to manage hazards. These directions may be given before the hazard is encountered or may need to be given during the exposure to the hazard. Ability to respond appropriately to stress or crises. • Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions. • Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living/travel and work skills as appropriate to the project. Additionally, remain adequately hydrated, fed, and properly dressed so as to remain generally healthy and safe, avoiding environmental injuries. • If taking prescriptions medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self- medicating without assistance from others. Substance Free: • In accordance to a drug free workplace, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and program activities and while on organization property. Background Check: A DOI background clearance must be completed before the selected candidate may report to duty. The BLM will provide instructions for completion of the clearance after an intern has been selected and will notify them when they have been cleared to start the internship. This process will determine the internship’s exact start date. Interns will have access to government facilities and systems, and will be supplied with access to gov’t vehicles, equipment, and materials needed to work on the projects and activities as outlined above. Interns must adhere to all government regulations and policies for operating equipment, vehicles, security awareness, and safety. *To be eligible for a Public Lands Corps certificate, interns must be between the ages of 18-30, inclusive, at the time the individual begins the term of service.
