Description
Observatory (GBBO), and Idaho State University (ISU), is seeking to fill positions for up to four Technicians, to conduct vegetation surveys at study sites within the Nevada portion of the Great Basin. Primary duties include vegetation surveys in fuel break treatments and riparian areas using line-point intercept, vegetation heights, canopy gap, cover boards, quadrats, and other methods. Identification of functional groups in sagebrush ecosystems and use of dichotomous keys are required. Additional duties will likely include training in identifying different biocrust morphogroups. Successful candidates should have the ability to accurately record and manage the data collected in the field. Standard work hours apply but may include weekends. The Great Basin landscape is beautiful but rugged and temperature extremes can range from below freezing to more than 100º F with inclement weather always a possibility. These temporary, full-time appointments start in September and end in November, with the potential for extended employment depending on project needs and performance into winter months. Primitive camping will be required at field sites in remote locations, and successful applicants will be required to stay on site during work periods. It is recommended to have a residence within a day’s drive of Reno, NV in the case of a COVID-19 quarantine or isolation event, although not required for employment. Please submit a cover letter, resume/CV, and contact information for three references (including at least 1 field reference) in a single PDF document saved with applicant’s last name in the title to: sagegrousescience@gmail.com. Cover letters and correspondence may be addressed to Ian Dwight and Seth Dettenmaier. Please include “Botanist Position” in the subject line. Applications and interviews are open now and will continue until positions are filled.
Qualifications
B.S. degree in a natural resource field preferred although experienced undergraduates are encouraged to apply for technician positions. Must be U.S. citizen with valid driver’s license. Successful applicants must possess the ability to hike long distances over rough terrain in inclement weather (rain, hail, high winds). The ability to follow direction and work independently, a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, desire to gain experience while maintaining an enthusiastic attitude, and good communication skills with field supervisor and teammates are essential. Prior experience driving 4x4 vehicles over rough terrain is also preferred for all positions. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working in sagebrush landscapes, previous experience identifying plants in the sagebrush steppe ecosystem, vegetation surveys, familiarity with vegetation survey protocols (e.g., BLM’s AIM), and strong interpersonal communication skills.
