CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. DSEPD’s mission is to improve health outcomes through a competent, sustainable, and empowered public health workforce. Our programs include fellowships and student programs, training and continuing education for health professionals, and activities for students and teachers interested in learning about public health. Research Project: The participant will be involved in program monitoring and evaluation of DSEPD’s fellowship and training programs. With mentorship and guidance from the DSEPD Associate Director for Evaluation, the participant should expect to gain program evaluation skills including evaluative thinking, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, communications, and problem-solving skills. Learning Objectives: This fellowship will offer the opportunity to learn about and obtain hands-on experience in the following activities: - Program monitoring and continuous quality improvement: The participant will support DSEPS’s annual fellowship reporting to document fellowship program activities, track goals and targets, collect data on fellowship indicators, and identify recommendations for program improvement. Related skillset: analytic and synthesis skills, communication, meeting facilitation, dissemination - Survey design and data collection: The participant will learn about survey design and how to collect online survey data by supporting planned evaluation activities. The fellow will collaborate with a mentor to create data collection tool and oversee the data collection process. Related skillset: survey design, project management, data management - Data analysis: The fellow will analyze data from the Division’s various fellowships to describe recruitment and graduation trends and outcomes as part of ongoing performance measurement and evaluation of these fellowships. Related skillset: quantitative data analysis, qualitative data analysis, data management, synthesis - Creating and disseminating reports: The fellow will have a role in creating reports and synthesis documents, disseminating them in creative ways, and maximizing use of the information by fellow staff and collaborators. Related skillset: analytic and synthesis skills, communication, data visualization, dissemination - Reviewing, synthesizing, and promoting scientific literature: The fellow will review and synthesize scientific literature relevant evaluating the Division’s work. The fellow will disseminate key findings and implications for DSEPD’s work. Related skillset: -Organizational skills, analytic and synthesis skills, communication - Other program evaluation activities: The fellow may collaborate with colleagues across the division to develop program logic models, identify evaluation questions, design and conduct studies to answer evaluation questions, interpret results, and generate recommendations. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree or be currently pursuing a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
