Description
Sierra Nevada Journeys is looking for a Challenge Course Manager with experience setting high standards of safety and facilitation for a challenge course. The Sierra Nevada Journeys challenge course includes 30 low elements, 12 high elements and sees over 10,000 participants a year. The CCM will conduct a five-day staff training in February and June for Instructors and Counselors on challenge course facilitation and operation standards. During fall and spring, the CCM will oversee instructors as they facilitate the challenge course for our residential outdoor-science education programs. These programs primarily serve 5th and 6th graders from regional elementary schools. When not tending to the challenge course program, the CCM will play a supporting role to Sierra Nevada Journeys’ program which may include leading meals and evening programs, fulfilling on-call duties, or acting as the leader on duty during the evenings. During the summer season, Sierra Nevada Journeys delivers both traditional summer camp programs and tailored programs for community groups. Sierra Nevada Journeys’ traditional, week-long summer camp programs have a traditional summer camp feel, with a focus on getting kids outside and learning science. The CCM will oversee the delivery of the challenge course to support both our traditional summer camps and our leadership and special needs community groups. The CCM will work directly with the programs leadership and operations staff to ensure all program challenge course deliverables are met. The CCM will be directly responsible for ensuring attending groups outcomes are addressed as they pertain to the challenge course, as well as the overall operation and safety of the Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus Challenge Course. The CCM is supervised by the Program Director. AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY 80% Challenge course facilitation, maintenance, and overall operation • Set high standards for safety and facilitation for Sierra Nevada Journeys Challenge Course; aligned with the latest practices according to ACCT and ACA guidelines. • In conjunction with our education team, continually refine the challenge course curriculum to ensure our programming supports collaborative problem solving, according to the needs of our community, school and summer programs • Set up, take down and daily safety checks of all the elements on the challenge course • Responsible for documentation of rope usage, daily reports and incident/near miss reporting • Train staff on all aspects of Challenge Course facilitation and conduct skills verification • Lead seasonal professional development training as needed or requested by Program Director • Collaborate with the Program Manager and Summer & Specialty Camps Manager to create Personal Improvement Plans for staff that do not pass skills verification exams and/or demonstrations, or show signs of low performance/safety standards • Provide staff with up-to-date Standard Operation Procedures • Coordinate inspections, significant repairs and large installations with an ACCT certified vendor • Perform daily/monthly inspections of high and low elements • Perform any necessary Challenge Course rescues • Provide support and feedback to facilitators • Maintain a budget and make necessary purchases for the Challenge Course program • Evaluate facilitators to ensure consistency with programmatic and safety standards • Act as the dotted line report for the Challenge Course Assistant Instructor (CCAI) • Train CCAI to CCM substitute level and conduct skills verification 20% Support other program functions • Act as overnight on-call staff/evening leader on duty as needed • Facilitate evening programming for outdoor school, community groups, and summer camps • Attend weekly Manager’s Meetings and report any necessary information
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • 2-3 years’ experience with Challenge Course management • ACCT Challenge Course Practitioner Level 2 or higher certification and/or equivalent hours/skills • Current First Aid and CPR certification • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook • Innate nature of being proactive and organized • Ability to work with people with special needs • Ability to take the initiative and work independently • Ability to analyze information, formulate work plans, articulate goals, and produce required statistical reports • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to be accountable to weekly deliverables • Exceedingly professional in all contacts with participant groups • Ability to pass a background check • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hike up to 7 miles • Experience with basic power tools and hand tools • MUST have a positive “can do” attitude PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience with Universal and Accessible Challenge Course High Ropes elements • Experience in developing, teaching and leading outdoor environmental education programs Bachelors in related field
