- “This position is part of a cohort of 20 climate change-focused internships that will receive specialized training and opportunities to engage with other members of the cohort.” The USDA Southeast Climate Hub has been developing resources (e.g., Hurricane Preparation and Recovery Commodity Guides, Identification, Mitigation, and Adaptation to Salinization Manual, Emerging Forest Threats Fact Sheets) that help producers build resilience to climate variability and change through adaptive management. These resources have been well received by the Extension and forestry communities, but outreach efforts were slowed during COVID. The RA will coordinate outreach efforts to develop workshops and webinars aimed at technical service providers (NRCS field staff, university Extension, state and county foresters, SE Agriculture Workbook) and producers. This will exponentially increase the awareness of these products and allow more producers to have the best available guidance to make climate informed decisions. The RA will also develop producer -focused web content, blogs, and tweets to highlight hub products and contribute toward the communication elements of two multi-year ongoing projects: 1) Updated Silvics of North American Project and 2) Drought Preparation and Recovery Commodity Guides for Producers in the Southeast U.S. The RA should be a highly motivated, outgoing individual with excellent organizational and communication skills (written and oral). RA’s education and/or experience should include a natural resource background and working knowledge of the impact of climate variability and change on agricultural production. Responsibilities: Assist with the establishment of field plots to quantity the impact of soil salinization in coastal forests; Assist with a project quantifying the benefits of best management practices on stream quality and quantity; Assist with a study to quantify down deadwood in forest stands.
