- The Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for three faculty positions at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor (Appointment Stream). These positions represent a unique opportunity to help shape the future of an actively growing Department and a suite of undergraduate programs in a supportive and welcoming environment. The duties for each position are described below. Applicants should have a strong teaching portfolio and be able to teach both introductory level and upper-level courses. We seek candidates with a terminal degree, preferably a PhD, in a field relevant to the position, or with equivalent background and experience. Excellent communication and writing skills are required. The ideal candidate’s teaching, mentorship and service will contribute diverse perspectives and experiences to department and University initiatives. The positions are scheduled to begin in Fall 2023. Teaching Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies and Program Coordinator for the Environmental Studies BA (ESBA): The successful candidate will teach writing and other relevant courses in Environmental Studies, identify and support internship opportunities for ESBA majors, and advise approximately 100 undergraduate majors in the ESBA Program. Other programmatic duties may include overseeing and mentoring part-time instructors for the ESBA program; maintaining program databases and budgets; overseeing and modifying the ESBA Program curriculum as necessary; writing, editing, and coordinating production of recruitment and promotional materials; and working with other University offices to recruit and track majors, and attracting students from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in the geosciences. Teaching Assistant Professor in Environmental Science: The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in Environmental Science areas, such as Ecosystem Ecology, Geomorphology, and/or Environmental Geochemistry, identify and support internship and research opportunities for ES majors, and will advise approximately 100 undergraduate majors in the Environmental Science BS Program. Other duties may include maintaining program databases; overseeing and modifying the Environmental Science curriculum as necessary; writing, editing, and coordinating production of recruitment and promotional materials; and working with other University offices to recruit and track majors. Additional duties could also include developing proposals for undergraduate research, new curriculum development, outreach, and attracting students from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in the geosciences. Teaching Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (GIS/RS): The successful candidate is expected to teach GIS and/or remote sensing courses in support of the department’s undergraduate GIS/RS certificate program and graduate Professional Science Masters (Pro-MS) degree in GIS/RS. We are particularly interested in candidates with a research background in areas such as geologic and environmental hazards, land use/land cover analysis, and impacts of climate change. Topics associated with the application of GIS/RS to societal and environmental issues from local to global scales using cutting edge and emerging tools like machine learning are of particular interest.This position includes supervising undergraduate students in their GIS certificate practicum requirement, preparation of course materials, identification and support of internship opportunities for GIS/RS students, and academic program assessment. Additional duties could also include developing proposals for undergraduate research, new curriculum development, outreach, and attracting students from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in the geosciences.
