The Communications Specialist II, under general supervision, writes, edits, designs and assists in the production of informational and promotional materials, presentations and special events.
This position is responsible for the maintenance, creative updates, and implementation of Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute’s external messaging. It will be important to help develop a strategic communications plan tied to NRI’s short- and long-term goals. It will be important to use strong written skills for the creation of external press releases, newsletters, web pages, blog articles, and marketing pieces used to showcase our work to AgriLife Administration, key funders, project partners, and the general public. Web related projects may include the creation of new web pages or graphics, as they relate to our 4 program areas (Land Trends, Military Land Sustainability, Wildlife Conservation, and Private Land Stewardship). This will include creating a social media plan involving input from NRI team members. Ingenuity is required to enhance NRI’s web-presence and reach, while integrating social media. It will be important to evaluate efforts by tracking and reporting online analytics to gauge implementation of new technologies for online marketing. There is a need to maintain and manage our digital library and develop photographic resources for NRI personnel. The candidate will assist others with providing content for communication materials, outreach, and databases and will work in a team environment to support the institute.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Writes, edits, designs and produces brochures, invitation, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, speeches and reports.
• Proofs, edits and updates information on departmental website
• Maintains a tracking system for project timelines and costs
• Assists in developing and implementing the overall departmental communications plan
• Drafts news releases
• Assists in planning, implementing and promoting special events and programs
• Prepares and coordinates publications with printers.
• Prepares presentations and displays.
Education – Required - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
Preferred – Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
Experience – Required - Two years of communications and/or marketing experience.
Preferred - Four years of progressively responsible related professional experience. Additional education and/or experience could be considered as a substitution for the minimum requirements.
Knowledge of – word processing and spreadsheet applications, website content management software (e.g., Word Press, Umbraco).
Ability to – multitask and work cooperatively with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills are extremely important. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Must be self-directed and able to maintain confidentiality, as required. Must be an innovator and self-learner and stay abreast of new technologies and web marketing strategies.
Knowledge of – the use of key words and search engine optimization.
Knowledge of - digital content management systems and graphic design fundamentals.
Experience in - planning media communication initiatives and priorities.
Experience in - local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to program areas, including laws covering Copyright, Privacy, Libel, Slander and Open Records/Open Meetings.
Ability to – verbalize and present information clearly and concisely based on strong written communication skills.
Ability to – utilize current tools and marketing techniques for radio, television, newspaper, magazine and online journalism, public relations and social media.
Ability to – write in Associated Press style, use photography and video production, graphic design and layout, and internet web-page development to deliver messages.
Ability to - work with scientific staff and information and translate information to Texas and national media.
