Description
Spend a summer working in Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge in Errol, New Hampshire! The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is a cooperative program between the NorthWoods Stewardship Center, a non-profit conservation and education organization, and the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). YCC Crews work at National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) throughout the Northeast Region. At each site, crews improve wildlife habitat, study and protect wildlife populations, and manage critical infrastructure. NorthWoods Stewardship Center is currently seeking a Crew Leader (ages 21+) to lead crew members (ages 15-18), complete conservation projects, and facilitate educational activities during the summer. Crew season lasts approximately 7 weeks. DETAILS Dates: Approximately June 18 through August 17. The first week (June 18-22) will be Crew Leader training, held at NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, VT. Work begins at the refuge on June 25 and ends mid-August. Pay Rate: $13.75 per hour Commitment: Crew Leaders and Assistant Leaders work a minimum of 40 hours per week for 7 weeks during the summer Housing: USFWS housing facilities are open to Crew Leaders depending on availability. Accommodations vary by location but typically include sleeping quarters and access to kitchen and bath facilities Training Opportunity: Wilderness First Aid Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supervise and manage a crew of 4 members (ages 15-18) while completing priority conservation projects Facilitate educational development for crew throughout the season Coordinate with USFWS supervisory staff on project logistics Compile project logs and crew member evaluations Ensure a safe work environment for crew members and the public Routinely prepare and maintain tools/equipment before and after projects Serve as an exemplary leader and role model for crew members Maintain strong relationship and communication with project partners (including USFWS staff) To apply, please send a copy of your resume and cover letter to Alexandra Kirk at alex@northwoodscenter.org
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills Candidates should possess, at a minimum, the following: Strong interest in natural resource conservation, management, and education Experience working with and educating youth Trail maintenance and construction skills preferred Demonstrate leadership skills and experience managing groups The ability to work responsibly and cooperatively as a member of a team Commitment to protecting and improving the quality of the environment for human and natural communities Experience in best practices for field safety and a general understanding of Leave No Trace principles Capable of performing strenuous physical labor such as carrying more than 50 pounds and/or tools over rough, uneven terrain Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license Candidates must be 21 or older by June 18, 2018
