To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.” WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Conservation Practitioner I performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. The Conservation Practitioner I (CPI) maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and removes exotic species by chemical or mechanical means. CPI operates power tools, equipment, ATV’s and vehicles in a safe manner. CPI maintains and repairs equipment including lawn mower, trimmer, brush cutter, chainsaw, tractor, ATV’s, UTV’s, spray tanks, pumps, and vehicles. The CPI assists with forest, woodland, prairie and savanna stewardship practices and management, surveying and monitoring flora and fauna, and assisting with prescribed fire. The CPI maintains facilities and grounds including mowing, trimming, fence and gate repair, installation of signage, trail maintenance, and building maintenance. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. This position will be stationed at J.T. Nickel Family Nature & Wildlife Preserve near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. This is a regular full-time position (35-40 hours per week) lasting through August 2023. Housing is not provided. WHAT WE BRING Since 1951, TNC has been doing work you can believe in. WHAT YOU'LL BRING High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment). Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application). Valid driver’s license. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members. Ability to work in a team environment. Knowledge of native Oklahoma plants and animals Knowledge of invasive species and treatment options desirable Ability to serve in remote areas at times with limited communications Ability to navigate and read maps Willingness to complete RXCM wildland firefighting training under NWCG
