General Statement of Position This position coordinates the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA’s) conservation and science-related activities in order to harness the community’s collective expertise and leverage audiences to save species, build conservation capacity within the AZA community, and raise awareness of AZA members as conservation and science organizations. Position will support growth of and member engagement in AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction and other conservation and science programs; coordinate AZA’s grant programs; utilize and improve departmental databases for tracking and reporting; generate reports and updates for publication; and prepare and give presentations. Position will communicate with, and provide excellent member services to, SAFE species programs, AZA members, and AZA’s Wildlife Conservation, Research and Technology, and other committees. This position reports to the Vice President of Conservation and Science. Essential Position Functions: • Support member engagement in SAFE, including transition of existing cooperative programs into SAFE; Review, provide feedback on, and develop communications regarding SAFE species proposals, program plans, and reporting; Work with AZA conservation staff to maintain databases of engagement, program accountability, and progress toward programmatic measures of success. • Coordinate administration of AZA’s granting programs, including development of application materials, grant writing and reporting to funders, and communication of outputs. • Update, utilize, and improve user experience of AZA’s member database (hosted on Association Management Software) to promote member use, track member engagement and activity, and reporting. • Assist with development and delivery of training to increase member capacity for conservation planning, project management, and communications. • Maintain consistent communication with related committees and program leaders. Review and adapt conservation and science program (SAFE, grants) processes to minimize burdens on members, track impact, and maximize benefits. • Develop, review, and edit conservation and science related publications and presentations. • Update and maintain departmental sections of the AZA website. • Assist departmental staff with special projects; Perform other duties as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics: • Knowledge of scientific methods, conservation, conservation planning, and program evaluation. • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific findings and apply multi-disciplinary information to program management. • Strong attention to detail; skill in managing data and conveying information accurately, querying and analyzing data, and formatting and editing reports. • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills, sound judgement, and confidence or poise. Ability to represent AZA, its programs, and members professionally to diverse audiences. Minimum Training: • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Conservation Biology, or similar (Master’s degree preferred). Training in project management or facilitation a plus.
