- GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: To uphold and educate others on responsible conservation and land management at Westcave Preserve by completing tasks, projects, and protecting current habitat that promote the growth of all native and migratory species. Conservation Roles-included but not limited to: Research: • Stay informed with new research methods for management efforts • Manage/assist/conduct Golden-cheeked warbler surveys and banding, report to LCRA • Conduct rare flora and faunal surveys and maintain and/or enhance habitat • Manage and maintain all in-house current research efforts such as, water quality monitoring, Feederwatch, Nestwatch, Frogwatch, barberry surveys, etc. General maintenance: • Maintain public trail systems for safety, mowing, erosion, etc. • Check fences, signage for repair work on rotation or after extreme weather events • Bird blind maintenance and upkeep • Butterfly gardens maintenance and upkeep • Maintenance and upkeep of all preserve facilities • Maintain preserve wide signage, benches, etc. • Maintenance of small engines such as, chainsaws, weedeaters, mowers, etc. Land management: • Catalogue/map non-native, invasive floral species, research and implement best eradication methods. • Maintain the best land stewardship practices in accordance with Westcave Preserve, Lower Colorado River Authority, Balconces Canyonland Preserve and US Fish & Wildlife Service • Manage non-native animal issues, data collection, monitoring, eradication and/or control if needed (red imported fire ants, crazy ants, feral hogs, etc.) • Prairie maintenance, vegetation nodes, maintain photopoints on Uplands/prairie, assist with coordination of prescribed burns, maintain firelines • Oversee vegetation plantings, trimming and/or removal Volunteer and Conservation Intern Management: • Train, manage, schedule interns and volunteers • Assist and/or manage groups of volunteers on conservation projects on volunteer workdays • Assist or manage additional volunteer & Intern management projects as needed including: contacting potential volunteers, posting internship positions at local colleges and universities, and tracking volunteer/intern hours monthly, and log volunteer workday projects Education: • Assist education department if necessary Please email Amber@westcave.org with cover letter and resume.
- Qualifications
- Qualifications: • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Science, Science Education or a related field preferred. • Previous job experience in natural resource management, environmental education or a similar field. Experience in trail building, fence repair, carpentry and electric/plumbing preferred. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Ability to work occasional weekends and/or evenings • Background check required. • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred (available as part of training) • Class C Driver’s license required KEY COMPETENCIES: • Experience with basic Microsoft programs • Experience with GIS programs • Ability to enforce preserve rules and guidelines • Excellent oral and written communication skills PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: • Good physical condition for manual labor including lifting supplies up to 50 pounds, strenuous hiking, carrying supplies for an extended period of time • Physical ability to implement land management projects • Required to work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions • Able to work in a non-smoking environment
