- Participates as a freshwater mussel biologist within the state-wide Mussel Program conducting mussel surveys and monitoring. Other duties may include leading with guidance: mussel restoration activities involving propagation activities, translocations, stocking, in-situ bioassays using Barnhart Silos, water quality sampling, eDNA sample collection, habitat assessment, report writing, making presentations, and other duties assigned as needed. Employee will be responsible for accurate measurement and recording of field data as well as care and maintenance of field gear and vehicles. This position will work with the mussel program staff to conduct research and conduct analysis of data. This person will be expected to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with the Mussel Program leader, as well as other WVDNR staff and partners. This is a great opportunity for a recent graduate to gain invaluable experience working for a state fish and wildlife agency and network with wildlife professionals from many state and federal agencies.
- Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: A B.S. and adequate experience or M.S. in biology, environmental science or a closely related field. Experience using office software products, and creating professional documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to work extended stays in field locales. The applicant must be capable of working in all weather conditions (hot, cold, and wet). Must be able to swim and be comfortable in and around the water (frequent snorkeling required). Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience surveying for and identifying freshwater mussels or other field experience. Preference will be given to applicants with SCUBA certification and outboard boat operation skills although all applicants should be willing to obtain certification.
