- Alaska Fellows Program position description Cook Inlet Housing Authority Community Development Fellow cookinlethousing.org This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable. Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats. At CIHA we measure our success not just by the number of housing units we build, but by the impact we have in our communities. Our overall mission is to create housing opportunities that empower our people and build our community. CIHA’s core mission-driven work lies in developing and operating housing, especially affordable housing, in core communities in Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska. CIHA’s Community Development department lays groundwork for new affordable housing in Anchorage through policy advocacy and real estate, while creating vibrant neighborhoods that support the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of the people that live in them. Focus areas include community engagement and local housing and development policy; arts, culture and creative placemaking, including indigenous place-naming; small business economic development, open space amenity programming; and pre-development planning and property acquisition. The department also leads an initiative known as “The Nave,” a community, arts, and cultural hub central to our housing and redevelopment work in the neighborhood of Spenard. The Community Development Fellow will primarily provide support to the Community Development Department, working with a small group of 4-5 staff members to build the department’s capacity over a range of activities. CIHA is a fast-paced work environment and often considered a leader in the Anchorage community when it comes to thinking creatively to address our community’s challenges. We are looking for someone who is passionate about our mission and the communities with whom we work. Position Description: In collaboration with the Community Development Planners and Vice President of Community Development, the Community Development Fellow will support our work in planning, economic development, and community engagement and partnerships. The Fellow will help develop community relationships, bring new perspectives and innovation to current focus areas, support the development of new programs and initiatives, and support efforts to assess, document and communicate the impact of our Community Development work. Specific responsibilities will include: Support CIHA’s Creative Placemaking practice and help develop partnerships with artists to engage in this practice. Help to organize and frame the work around The Nave to be an inclusive and equitable community hub that supports the local neighborhood, artists, and culture bearers. Communicate the broader purpose, goals, and outcomes of CIHA’s community development mission and The Nave to internal and external stakeholders, including The Nave and CIHA websites and social media, based on CIHA internal goals and best practices among community development organizations. Provide support with commercial real estate leasing, in particular evaluating lease rates, assessing small business needs, helping to attract neighborhood based business tenants and documenting the impact of this work. Outreach to Spenard businesses nearby and engage in opportunities to work collaboratively on commercial corridor issues. This includes a future road improvement project. Research opportunities for funding to support programming at The Nave and enhancements to physical spaces that promote health and wellness. Provide grant writing research and assistance. Engage in community conversations around community-identified needs and priorities. Support the framing of a “CIHA Development Framework” to internally guide future affordable housing developments including documenting neighborhood demographics, housing needs, and CIHA’s portfolio performance. Support Community Development efforts to connect with CIHA residents Interface with the Community Development team and other internal departments, such as Resident Engagement, to identify opportunities for collaboration. Support other community development initiatives as needed and interested. Position Logistics Hours for this position will likely be Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, at CIHA’s office in The Nave in the Spenard neighborhood of Anchorage. Limited travel within Anchorage will be required. The fellow will report to Tyler Robinson, VP of Community Development, Real Estate, & Planning.
