The Reef Restoration Program at Mote's Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration is currently seeking interns for the winter term, with preferred start dates at the beginning of August 2022.
Mote's Coral Reef Restoration Program focuses on large-scale propagation of corals in a land-based nursery to support ongoing research and restoration. The internship at the land-based coral nursery primarily involves daily coral husbandry (handling coral fragments to remove algae and other fouling organisms) and basic aquaculture maintenance duties (cleaning tanks and seawater systems). However, duties may also include hands-on propagation of corals using Mote's "micro-fragmentation" technique, and assisting with experiments aimed at improving propagation methods. Interns will work closely with a dedicated team of staff, who will act as mentors during and after the internship.
Start dates are flexible. The internship is a commitment of a minimum of 10 weeks. Most internships are 14 weeks. Hours are typically Mon-Fri, 7:30am – 3:30pm, with the possibility of long hours and weekends. Housing is sometimes available in dormitory housing (shared rooms – no pets allowed) at our Summerland Key facility for a reasonable rate. However, when the facility is full, interns will be responsible for finding their own off-site housing. Interns must also have their own transportation to and from the facility, located in Summerland Key, Florida. While traditionally an unpaid internship, there may be stipend opportunities. Inquires about the stipend can be made upon acceptance.
Candidates will be expected to work independently and as a team. Ideal applicants will be self-motivated. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in variant weather, as temperatures tend to be in the 80s, with minimal arm sun protection. Applicants must be interested in/ willing to learn about coral husbandry.
