To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you'll join for the mission, and you'll stay for the people.” WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER We are seeking a Grassland Conservation Fellow (Fellow) within the Cross Ranch program. The position works under the supervision of Cross Ranch ND Fire Manager and is based at the Cross Ranch office near Center, ND. This is a regular, full-time position with a pay rage of $20-$25 per hour DOE. Housing onsite is available. This position has funding secured through Dec 27, 2024, with the possibility of extension. The ideal candidate will be a college graduate with some experience in conservation (restoration, land management, etc) and is looking for opportunities to learn and grow as a professional in the field of conservation by gaining hands-on experience. The Fellow will be provided with opportunities to network with other agencies, attend professional conferences, and work independently. While participating in various aspects of conservation land management from planning and budgeting to maintenance and ecological monitoring, the Fellow will practice skills such as: decision-making, problem solving, project management; public speaking; and leadership. The Fellow will assist with planning and implementing preserve ecological management plans and projects for the Cross Ranch Office by leading work teams. These teams will ensure implementation of preserve management plans across the three TNC preserves in central North Dakota (Cross Ranch, John E. Williams, and Davis Ranch) which is roughly 15,000 acres. They address critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among the conservation community, and supply conservation planning with site level information relevant to the planning process. They will participate in stewardship activities, including the management of invasive species, prescribed fire, facilities maintenance, and bison husbandry. This position will require irregular work hours and long days. While this position will work primarily from the Cross Ranch office, they will occasionally travel and stay overnight at other work locations within the MN-ND-SD Chapter. Some other responsibilities could include: • Preserve maintenance tasks (control invasives, mark boundaries, check/maintain fences, upkeep of facilities, maintain trails) • Prescribed fire preparations and participating on prescribed burns on TNC, partner, and private lands. • Lead or assist with ecological monitoring on TNC lands. • Lead or monitor staff, contractors, and partners in completing projects and achieving management goals. Organize logistics, promote crew cohesion, and ensure a safe working environment. • Develop outreach, including giving presentations, leading field trips and developing written materials • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets. • Coordinates community support by recruiting and working with landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to publicize Conservancy programs/preserves. • Work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context. • Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Please indicate this in your resume DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS • NWCG FFT2 qualified is desired but willing to work towards this level of training. • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV/ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment). • Experience controlling invasive species in prairie ecosystems via herbicide application from UTVs, ATVs, and backpack sprayers. • Ability to become ND Commercial Applicator certified. • Ability to identify local flora and fauna with minimal training, including grassland birds, butterflies, and key plant species. • Experience working with or around livestock (cattle and/or bison) and working with grazing practices and fencing systems. • Experience with GPS and GIS. • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field. • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s). • Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages. • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc. • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
