Description
South Dakota State University’s Department of Natural Resource Management (NRM) is offering an exciting career opportunity for an Assistant Professor position with expertise in Cultural Ecology. This 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track position has research, teaching, and service responsibilities. The appointment is 40% research and 60% teaching. The preferred start date is August 22, 2022. The position will be in Rapid City, SD, at our West River Research and Extension Center (WRRE) and is supervised by the Department Head of Natural Resource Management. The successful candidate will also be the SDSU West River Wizipan Program liaison for the Wokini Initiative located on the main campus in Brookings, SD. The candidate will be expected to be active in undergraduate and graduate teaching and training programs and obtain competitive research funding to address research questions in their area of expertise. The successful candidate should have a strong research background in natural resource management or closely related field, with an emphasis on addressing questions that inform natural resource management, and experience working with diverse groups and cultures. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Contribute to our undergraduate curriculum including courses such as People and their Environment (with an emphasis on Indigenous perspectives), a graduate course in Grazing Ecology and Management, and develop a graduate course in area of their specialty. Some of these courses will also contribute to the SDSU Wizipan program led by the West River faculty. • Periodically teach seminars and special topics. • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. • Establish a nationally recognized research program which attracts extramural research funding, including support for graduate students, and produce publications in national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. • Participate in University, College, and Department governance and service as well as professional service and outreach activities.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Completed Ph.D. in natural resource management or closely related discipline by application date. • Demonstrated record of research and scholarly activities, including a strong contemporary analytical skill set. • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal communication skills. • A valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment. • Must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Postdoctoral experience. • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups and/or cultures. • Demonstrated experience in grant writing and manuscript publication in peer reviewed journals. • Demonstrated experience with innovative methodologies applicable to their research program. • Demonstrated experience in outreach and scientific communication. • Demonstrated experience teaching in-person and online and/or interest in innovative pedagogy. • Professional service. • Demonstrated collaboration with other scientists and with natural resource agencies. • Commitment to a collegial work environment.
