The Great Basin Institute seeks a dynamic professional to engage in program development in the context of a mission-driven environmental non-profit organization. Current programmatic projects include active partnerships with the National Park Service (Bryce Canyon, Death Valley, Great Basin, Lassen Volcano, Joshua Tree, Sequoia-Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion National Parks, and the Alaska Regional Office) and the US Forest Service (Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, and the Tahoe, Eldorado, Sequoia, and Stanislaus National Forests), among other units/entities. The Cultural Resources Program Lead is responsible for ensuring projects adhere to compliance with state and federal antiquities laws, including the National Historic Preservation Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. Developing scopes of work, responses to requests for proposals, and the selection, management, and oversight of contracted archaeological consultants and staff are also key responsibilities of this position. The Lead provides technical assistance and staff support to operations and is a coordinating member of project teams placed to perform a wide range of activities including survey, testing, artifact analysis, environmental documentation, tribal consultation, and report preparation. The Lead is also involved in outreach activities to highlight the Institute’s commitment to the management and conservation of cultural resources, and to engender stewardship activities through education. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Full-time position (Monday through Friday) with occasional need to work on holidays, weekends, and after hours;
- Work will primarily occur in an indoor, fast-paced and dynamic office environment;
- Some field site visits will be required. Incumbent should be able to hike in difficult terrain as necessary and perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs; and
- Some travel will be required that may include overnight stays.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation or related field.
Certification: Register of Professional Archaeologists.
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience, with a minimum of three years as a project supervisor in cultural resource management in areas to include: archaeological project design and management, archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, archaeological laboratory processing and artifact analysis, writing professional reports on archaeological or cultural resources issues. Incumbent must meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR Part 61)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Prehistoric and historic archaeology of the Great Basin, Mojave Desert, and/or Sierra Nevadas;
- Cultural resources protection and stewardship practices;
- State and federal antiquities laws;
- Natural resources protection and stewardship practices; and
- Environmental assessment, NEPA/CEQA statutes, and impact statements.
- Using MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), ESRI ArcGIS, and databases;
- Effective verbal and written communication;
- Archaeological/technical report writing;
- Applying archaeological and historic research techniques and methodologies;
- Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;
- Making independent, sound, and timely decisions;
- Managing multiple projects, short deadlines, and conflicting priorities; and
- Preparing and reviewing scopes of work and budgets for all phases of archaeological investigations.
- Apply cultural resource management theory and practice to federal- and state-owned resources;
- Manage and coordinate diverse program activities and accomplish program goals using independent judgment and initiative;
- Work with individuals with different types of training and backgrounds to create solutions and bring projects to completion;
- Work independently with little or no supervision;
- Work as a member of a team;
- Conduct work activities in accordance with safety program;
- Safely operate a GBI vehicle; and
- Work in a fast-paced, dynamic office environment, and consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI.
