Description
We are seeking an energetic, responsible intern to join our organization. In this position, you will be expected to work with staff on science communication and research data presentation, as well as create a usable project that will help to promote science communication on Georgia’s coast, in one of our organization's priority issues (see below). SINERR Priority Issues: Water Resource Management Stormwater Management Natural Infrastructure Water Quality & Conservation Natural Habitats Estuarine Ecology & Stewardship Nature's Benefits Natural Biodiversity Invasive Species Management Coastal Development Issues Sea Level Rise & Erosion Resiliency & Community Preparedness Land Use Planning Sustainability Cultural & Historical Resources Responsibilities Organize research library, including cataloging reports and research papers Digitize documents, maps, and charts Assist with existing science communication programs including our coastal science podcast and social media pages Create and present a finished science communication project or tool that will promote estuarine and coastal science in Georgia This position will be responsible for creating a science communication project, which will be presented at the completion of the internship in the format of the intern’s choosing. The project topic and process will be chosen by the intern, and a general idea of what type of project you will be working on during the internship should be included in your application. Projects should fall in one or more of SINERR’s Priority Issues or utilize SINERR’s SWMP data. Interns will be responsible for their own travel to and from the ferry dock located in Darien, GA. Interns must plan to be on-island at least once a week during the period of the internship. Ferry transport on the island will be provided. $800/month stipend (approximately 3 month internship period unless arranged otherwise) About Sapelo Island NERR Located off the coast of Darien, Georgia, Sapelo Island is a state-owned island that is bounded by Sapelo Sound on the north, Doboy Sound to the south, and is accessible only by ferry. The 16,500 acre island is the fourth largest barrier island on the Georgia coast. The 6,100 acres of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR), located along the western perimeter of Sapelo, is dedicated to research, education, stewardship, and sound management of coastal resources. SINERR is a partnership between the state (Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resource Division) and federal (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) agencies. SINERR’s outreach and research initiatives focus on the island’s natural ecosystems and the cultural and historical resources of Sapelo Island and the greater Altamaha River estuary. NERR System initiatives include the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP)for water quality and meteorological monitoring within each reserve’s watershed. The data collected provides a national baseline for assessment of short-term variability and long-term trends in our nation’s estuaries. Qualifications
Minimum Must be 18 years of age and able to legally work in the US High school degree or equivalent Proficient computer skills (including experience with Google or Microsoft Office Suite) Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent organizational skills and able to work without direct supervision Preferred Prior experience in science communication or experience with social science/research Experience content creation tools including Canva, Adobe, ect.
