Full time seasonal technicians needed to aid in a study quantifying the social dynamics, demography, and predator-prey interactions of white-tailed deer in and central and southern Illinois.
Duties will mainly involve assisting in capture and monitoring of white tailed deer, coyotes, and bobcats. Specific duties include:
1) Assisting in live capture and handling of deer by darting, drop net, and rocket net; capture of coyotes and bobcats by box and foothold traps.
2) Locating radio-marked animals via triangulation and homing.
3) Setting and maintaining trail camera stations.
4) Reviewing photos and video and entering data.
5) Interacting with and maintaining positive relationships with landowners.
6) Additional work as assigned.
Housing is available for technicians working in the Central Illinois study area.
Candidates should be willing to work long hours, some weekends if necessary, and should be willing travel throughout southern IL. Work will involve hiking through thick brush and carrying heavy equipment in mud, ice, and snow.
A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology or a related field is preferred and previous field experience is required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Candidates should be willing to work well both individually and as a member of a team. An ability to maintain a positive attitude in rough conditions is a must.
Prior experience with wildlife capture and chemical immobilization and telemetry experience is highly desired. Candidates MUST be in good physical condition and able to carry up to 25lbs of equipment several hundred meters over rough. The ability to take instruction and communicate effectively with fellow technicians and crew leaders is a must.
