Responsible for assisting the deer management program managers in different aspects of the Fairfax County Deer Management Program, to include field work, biological data collection, and coordination of deer management activities with county, state, and federal agencies.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule with long hours, 30 to 40 hours per week including evenings, nights, and possible weekends. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather. Critical days will be Tuesday and Thursday from November 2018 through March 2019.
Familiarity with firearms, gun and hunter safety. Ability to field dress large game in the field including ability to drag deer. Ability to operate various pieces of equipment, including four-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs and covered trailers.
This position is a limited-term, non-merit seasonal position (part-time, 900 hours/year max.). The starting date of this position is flexible but will tentatively run from August 2018 through May 2019 or when the allotted hours run out, whichever comes first. There is no travel or housing compensation for this position. Individuals in this position are not eligible to earn benefits, paid leave or receive holiday pay. This position may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year.
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to two years or more of college studies in biology, environmental or life sciences, natural resources or closely related field.
Must be physically fit with the ability to lift 75 pounds and drag up to 150 pounds. Must be able to operate ATV’s and have experience in towing trailers.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience as a field technician or research assistant in wildlife, natural resources, or a closely related field.
Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of employer. Must have a valid driver’s license.
