The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is seeking an experienced leader for its successful and growing conservation program. The Director of Conservation Programs reports directly to the Chief Conservation Officer and assists in delivering the conservation mission of the MDF. The Director of Conservation Programs will lead a conservation team which delivers habitat conservation through partnership and project implementation. This is a senior-level position and will work interdepartmentally and cross functionally with other MDF senior-level staff to help secure funding and resources MDF needs to successfully accomplish its mission and objectives. A strong background partnership work and experience in managing and supervising remote field staff is preferred. The individual work from a remote location and will be eligible for MDF’s benefits package. The individual will also work closely with the MDF staff, board, and volunteers. Light to moderate over-night travel is required. Job Summary: The Director of Conservation (Director) position assists the Chief Conservation Officer (CCO) in leading, managing, and implementing MDF’s conservation program including the supervision of conservation staff as assigned. The Director position provides program direction (planning, technical assistance, training, and support services) to the organization in regard to conservation planning, conservation and stewardship projects, existing conservation easements, and other mission activities. This position helps to ensure that coordination is maintained with Field Operations, Development, Marketing, and other departments in developing, implementing, and celebrating mission related programs. Other major responsibilities include fundraising, budget and strategic planning, program coordination internally and externally, and organizational representation at the national level. Essential Functions: 1. Program Development – Coordinate with CCO and other MDF staff to establish goals, strategies, priorities, processes, policies and individual responsibilities, in order to effectively administer and accomplish MDF mission and related activities. 2. Ensure that MDF remains a recognized expert in mule deer, black-tailed deer and deer habitat management, and that MDF is current with scientific mule deer and mule deer habitat management, and research policies and practices. 3. Direct the habitat enhancement, stewardship, conservation education, and the management of all associated files and databases including project history. 4. Provide leadership and direction in seeking funding and program and project support through national partnerships with federal and state agencies, other conservation organizations and private donors, foundations, and corporate sources. 5. Cultivate current relationships and develop and establish new relationships with other conservation groups, state and federal agency partners, private companies, landowners, and other conservation minded individuals and groups to position MDF as a respected leader in the conservation world. 6. Coordinate with Director of Field Operations and Regional Directors and State Chairs to plan Project Review Committee (PRC) meetings. Update the PRC’s with organizational policy, philosophy and direction. Provide training for new PRCs. Ensure the proper support is provided with regard to materials and information for PRC members. 7. Direct the review of all projects submitted for habitat enhancement, wildlife management, research, conservation education and hunting heritage to ensure consistency with the mission and within budget constraints. 8. Develop project proposals for funding by PRC’s, grants, partnerships with other organizations, state and federal agencies and private landowners. 9. Provide the data collection, data input, data tracking, data reporting functions, project follow-up through completion, reconciliation and reclassification of project expenses, and project analysis used to report mission accomplishment, market the organization and aid in its fund-raising goals. 10. Write grants for funding habitat enhancement, research, and other conservation projects. 11. Assist with the development and monitoring of the conservation program budget. 12. Provide wildlife management expertise to MDF, other agencies and organizations and the public. 13. Other duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities: Represent MDF at local, regional, and national meetings, seminars and symposiums that deal with natural resource management, and related fields of resource management. Provide staff and volunteers with project information, resource issue insights, and suggested strategies. Provide input and or comment on state and federal land management policies which impact mule deer.
Education and Experience A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management or a related field. A minimum of five years’ experience working in natural resource or wildlife management and experience working in a mid- to senior level position in natural resources or wildlife management. Strong emphasis on wildlife management, research, land management, habitat enhancement and wildlife policy. Experience working with State and Federal agencies, national conservation organizations on conservation issues and policy. Demonstrated experience in supervision, leadership, organizational management, and program management. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, are required, and experience in government affairs and public speaking is desirable. To Apply: Application through email only.
