We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral student to study the effects of invasive vegetation on mammal communities in South Texas while pursuing a Ph.D. degree in wildlife science. The student will be expected to conduct fieldwork at the field site (Welder Wildlife Refuge) in rural south Texas and live on-site during field seasons. Fieldwork will primarily involve camera trapping, as well as vegetation surveys. The student will be expected to begin the graduate program at TAMUK in August 2021 with an expected graduation date of Spring 2025. The student will be co-advised by Dr. Scott Henke (TAMUK/CKWRI) and Dr. Cord Eversole (Texas A&M International University).
Required qualifications: A strong work ethic, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a research team, and the ability and willingness to work under adverse field conditions (extreme heat and humidity, ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, etc.) are essential. B.S. & M.S. in wildlife ecology, wildlife management, ecology, zoology, or related discipline by May 2021. Must have demonstrated experience (e.g., preferably in the form of scientific publications/technical reports) with camera trapping, occupancy modeling, and R/statistical programming. Experience with writing and publishing scientific manuscripts Independent and self disciplined Experience conducting fieldwork Strong interest in writing and publishing scientific manuscripts Minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA, 3.5 graduate GPA, and competitive GRE scores Ability to maintain minimum 3.0 graduate GPA Preferred qualifications (In addition to required qualifications): Experience conducting fieldwork independently in remote or rural areas Experience working along or near the US-Mexico border Experience conducting vegetation surveys Experience with systems dynamics or spatial modeling To apply: Send cover letter (highlighting required experience), full CV, and list of three references to Dr. Cord Eversole via email ( by 28 Feb 2021.
