- Description
- Conservation Begins Here. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the programs. Training Dates: 5/15/23 5/25/23 (training is paid and mandatory; dates subject to some change) Program Dates: 6/5/23 9/8/23 Location (City and State): Monongahela National Forest (WV), Blue Ridge Parkway (VA), White Mountains National Forest (NH) Primary Responsibilities: The Eastern Roving Resource & Trail Leader Project Leader will work closely with the United States Forest Service (USFS) and National Park Service (NPS). This leader will work with a team of three adult (18+) members for 12 field weeks, plus up to 4 weeks of training and season prep/close out. Project leader training may not take place at the worksite, and likely will be with other leaders who will be working across the country. The leader will have time before and after the team is on-site for season set up and closeout. This teams season will take place at three sites: Hitch 1: 3 Weeks at Monongahela National Forest (WV) Projects on the Monongahela will involve completing USFS condition surveys. Condition surveys are vital for securing government funding for improvements on forest service land and recreation sites and help guide what improvements need to be made at these recreation sites. Additionally, the crew may be collecting photos that can be used on Recreation.gov, as well as some trail and campground maintenance (trail brushing, sign installation, painting). Hitch 2: 4 Weeks at Blue Ridge Parkway (VA) Project work on the Blue Ridge will be focused on rehabilitating trails along the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Work projects will include erosion control, clearing trail corridors, and rehabilitating trail surfaces on the Catoctin Trail and Humpback Rocks Trail. Hitch 3: 3 Weeks at White Mountains National Forest (NH) Projects on the Monongahela will involve completing USFS condition surveys. The team will stay at front country campsites throughout the season. SCA will provide all necessary support services, crew leadership, transportation, personal safety equipment, and other standard materials/supplies necessary to perform the work. Leaders should be prepared to camp for weeks at a time where campsite amenities can be limited. Teams are provided with Wi-Fi units, but cell/internet service may be limited. Teams remain together for the entirety of the season, so team leaders should be flexible, be willing to share space, live communally, and be invested in teammates personal and professional growth. At the start of the season, all members will go through an SCA orientation, wilderness medicine, and other relevant skills training. Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
