Description: The School of Renewable Natural Resources at Louisiana State University is seeking 2 experienced field technicians to assist a graduate student with Masters Research evaluating Eastern wild turkey reproductive ecology in South Carolina. Field work will be centered on the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources: Webb Center, Hamilton Ridge, and Palachucola Wildlife Management Areas as well as nearby privately owned property. Primary responsibilities will include rocket net setup, turkey capture and handling, radio-telemetry, habitat sampling and data recording. Candidates with experience including capture, marking, vegetation, and radio telemetry will be given preference, as will candidates with GIS coursework and experience. The position will begin in January and last through the end of June for two technicians.
One field technician will be hired for the months of January 1st, 2018- February 28th, 2018 and responsibilities will focus on trapping turkeys and radio telemetry for this two month period. There is however a possibility of a contract extension depending on experience and need for extra help.
Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants that have a B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field. Competitive candidates will be expected to: (1) Have previous field experience that includes animal capture and tagging. (2) Have previous experience with radio telemetry and wildlife tracking. (3) Have previous experience with GIS. (4) Have strong interpersonal skills as daily interaction with landowners, hunters, state agency personnel, and other stake holders will occur. (5) Work early mornings and late nights and weekends when necessary. (6) Have experience operating 4wd vehicles and ATV's. (7) Have experience with vegetation sampling and surveys. (8) Have experience with climbing tree stands and doesn’t have a fear of heights.
