The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) and Coastal America Foundation (CAF) seek an intern to assist DER staff with a variety of office and field-based tasks that complements the Division’s mission to restore and protect rivers, wetlands, and watersheds for the benefit of people and the environment. The selected intern will gain a broad understanding of aquatic habitat restoration in Massachusetts, hands-on skills with streamflow measurement and monitoring, and opportunities to interact with other state and federal agencies.
The intern will gain experience working across DER’s programs, with the majority of time spent working with the Streamflow Restoration program. Specific duties may include:
• Measuring streamflow in wadeable streams using a flow meter
• Surveying stream gages
• Installing and downloading pressure transducers and time-lapse cameras
• Researching streamflow restoration and water conservation techniques
• Developing tools that communicate the impact of DER’s work
A smaller portion of the internship will include in-office administrative tasks, such as data entry and analysis, and attending relevant meetings. The intern may occasionally be asked to provide field support for DER’s Aquatic Habitat Restoration Program and will be provided opportunities to participate in other staff activities. Exact duties will vary depending on intern interests and abilities and on program needs.
The ideal intern will have enthusiasm for working both indoors and outdoors and will currently be working on or have a bachelor’s degree and some experience in aquatic ecology, hydrology, water quality, data analysis, and/or field science. An interest in learning more about ecological restoration and/or state environmental agency work is a must. Field work will be carried out in a range of weather conditions and the intern should be comfortable working in and around rivers with a field partner.
The intern will work approximately 4 days (30 hours) per week for 10 weeks from June to August (exact dates and times flexible). Hourly pay rate is $15/hour with internship not to exceed 320 hours.
The intern will be based out of DER’s Boston office located at 251 Causeway St., Boston, MA 02114.
Some travel will be required for fieldwork. A valid driver’s license and access to a car is required. Mileage reimbursement is available.
