The Ecologist/Conservation Specialist joins a diverse team of conservation staff, each of whom executes and manages individual projects, as well as collaborates on larger projects and events. The primary geographic focus of this position is Great River Greening’s Southern MN Program area. The Southern MN Program area encompasses the Cannon River Watershed, Nicollet County and Redwood County areas. While this position reports directly to the Southern MN Program Manager, the Ecologist/Conservation Specialist may be working on projects across Great River Greening’s three geographic regions: Southern MN, Twin City Metro, and Central MN to realize on-the-ground impacts and community connections.
Guided by our mission, projects may include continuous living cover crops, regenerative agriculture, natural area restoration, management plans, native plantings, working lands, pollinator monitoring, community events and field days, and farmer consultations. The Ecologist/Conservation Specialist will conduct independent field and site reviews, farmer meetings, volunteer events, and field days and must have access to a car.
The position is an exempt, full-time position with benefits including health, dental, 401k, LTD, Dependent Care and Health Care FSA, life insurance, and a PTO plan. Salary range is $45-50,000, depending upon experience. This position is open to remote work. Great River Greening offers a flexible workplace and staff are currently working hybrid. Staff are currently required to be in office once a week on Tuesday to attend staff meetings and check-in with other staff members. Staff are expected to assist with or coordinate events on Saturdays or weeknights at least four times each year.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Project Implementation and Management (80%)
- Organize farmer discussions, dinners, field days, and consultations about continuous living cover crops and other conservation practices.
- Coordinate outreach activities with continuous living cover and regenerative agriculture partners in Southern Minnesota.
- Coordinate water, soil, and pollinator sampling and surveys in agricultural fields and restored grasslands.
- Carry one-on-one conversations with farmers, landowners, and community leaders about continuous living cover crops, carbon markets, and other conservation practices.
- Conduct ecological inventories and analysis utilizing GIS mapping software.
- Write and review ecological restoration, stewardship and management plans and oversee those produced by Greening staff, contractors, and partners, where applicable.
- Perform Project Management tasks including project development, bid development, seed mix development, and project management with assistance from other staff as needed.
- Provide guidance to contractors and Great River Greening’s crew in the implementation of natural resource management tasks.
- Provide ecological training and education to volunteers, clients, and partner organizations when necessary.
- Represent Great River Greening at volunteer events, public meetings, farmer meetings, and in interaction with public and private landowners.
Mission Specific Work (20%)
- Attend and participate in conservation and volunteer planning meetings.
- Participate in fundraising functions under the direction of Development and Operations.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Possess a strong familiarity with native plant community types of the Upper Midwest and excellent plant identification skills.
- Understanding of ecological management and systems.
- Proficient in ArcPRO (preferable) Microsoft Suites, and data management. Aerial photo interpretation a plus.
- Knowledge and experience in agriculture, soil, and conservation practices (familiarity with Kernza®, winter camelina, and other continuous living cover crops a plus).
- Pollinator identification skills a plus.
- Conscientious, collaborative, and reliable.
- Ability to work towards managing complex and collaborative projects, tracking, and developing budgets and bid proposals, and writing grants.
- Degree in ecology, conservation biology, or related field (natural resources management, environmental science, botany, water resources, agricultural sciences, or related field) and 2 years of related work experience. Extensive field knowledge and experience can be substituted for formal education.
- Experience with a variety of land management and data management software (ArcPRO & Microsoft Suites).
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to transportation to conduct site visits and meetings with partners.
