- Education Program Assistant (Raptor Center Conservation Educator)
The Raptor Center Conservation Educator supports Shaver's Creek Environmental Center's outreach through the care of over 40 animal conservation ambassadors (amphibians, reptiles, and raptors), training our animal care volunteers, and engaging learners of all ages. A primary responsibility is assisting with the daily training of non-releasable raptors through positive reinforcement to promote comfort in their aviaries, obtain daily weights, encourage natural behaviors, and preparing them for their roles as educational ambassadors. The Conservation Educator will take a lead role in training some of our raptors. In addition to training animals, an equally important job is assisting in the training of seasonal interns, Penn State students, and volunteers, preparing them to further their animal care careers at other facilities. The Conservation Educator will also take the lead in creating awareness, appreciation, and action toward the conservation of our education animals' wild counterparts, both on and off-site. Successful candidates have a strong interest in working with and promoting the conservation of native wildlife. Equally important are empathy, compassion, patience, and a desire to improve the welfare of our animals. Experience with positive reinforcement techniques and a previous animal care background is preferred, but reliability and an enthusiasm to learn are paramount. Ability to produce multi-media education resources (videos, blogs, and articles) is desired. A successful candidate will become an integral member of a Shaver's Creek staff that prides itself on a culture of collaboration, shared decision making, respect, and trust from leadership to make decisions in individual program areas that benefit the strategic goals of the whole. Candidates should also possess a strong environmental ethic consistent with the mission of Shaver's Creek Environmental Center; a zero-waste facility situated 12 miles from University Park campus within Penn State's 7,000 acre Stone Valley Forest. This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a High School diploma or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. This is a fixed-term appointment funded through December 31, 2018.
