Description
Two volunteers positions are available to support research identifying the response of arthropods to forest restoration. Volunteer duties will primary consist of identifying arthropods using a microscope. Other duties may include building a photographic library of species, entering data, and preparing specimens for identification and isotopic analysis. The volunteer may also assist in other aspects of the research study as needed, including field work. There may be opportunities to participate on other projects as needed. The volunteer may operate a government motor vehicle and must have valid driver’s license. The work is full time, Monday - Friday (40 hours per week).
Qualifications
Background in biology, ecology, entomology or conservation biology. Experience identifying arthropods preferred. Must be willing to spend full days working in the lab. Housing will be provided in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Once-per-week transportation to Hilo to obtain groceries and other supplies will be provided. Travel expenses to Hawaii are not covered but round-trip inter-island travel from Honolulu to Hilo is provided if needed. Volunteers are free to explore the park or other parts of Hawaii Island on weekends. All USGS federal safety regulations and rules will be strictly enforced, including current additional restrictions due to COVID-19. Service period: 11 January 2020 – 30 April 2020.
