Description: The Bureau of Freshwater and Biological Monitoring is responsible for several multi-year monitoring programs, some of which have served as prototypes for the nation. Water Quality Monitoring projects emphasize watershed monitoring and efficiently combine biological and chemical/physical monitoring as part of emerging state and federal strategies to assess the success of State and Federal Clean Water Act Programs. A wide range of parameters are collected including: physical/chemical, nutrients, metals, discharge and biological and bacteriological.
Job Description: Assist in the field collection of biological (macroinvertebrates and fish) and physical/chemical samples and measurements at freshwater streams, lakes, and groundwater throughout NJ. Responsible for meter calibration and equipment prep. Process biological samples in the laboratory, Data entry. Candidate will be required to wade into streams and perform work on a boat. Fisheries duties include assisting with fish collection using backpack electrofishing in wadeable streams and rivers as part of the Northern NJ Fish IBI and Headwaters Fish IBI Programs.
Residency: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7(L. 2011 Chapter 70), also known as the New Jersey First Act which became effective September 1, 2011, all persons newly hired by the NJDEP on or after that date shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. New Jersey state employees hired prior to September 1, 2011 who transfer from within the NJDEP or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside the State of New Jersey are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the act.
