Position Title: Environmental Educator Department: Education Programs Location: Southern NJ Office Location: Southern NJ - TBD Reports To: Project Coordinator – Eco-Schools NJ Job Classification: Full-time regular, (40 hours per week) Job Description: The Environmental Educator has duties primarily in the education branch of the NJ Audubon mission and provides diverse nature and sustainability programs to schools, afterschool and public audiences throughout Southern New Jersey. All school programs integrate S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts and skills along with arts integration. The Environmental Educator also works with children, adults and families exploring the natural and built environment including exploring city parks and schoolyards, and conducting community block walks. The Environmental Educator should be able to offer a unique point of view with regards to outdoor exploration and learning in the urban environment. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Educational Programming • Plan, develop, schedule, and conduct natural history programs for after-school programs, special interest groups, nature camps, the general public, and families. • Work with the statewide education team to deliver school sustainability programs using the Eco-Schools USA framework. • Maintain lesson plans, educational supplies, teaching materials, files and records, and all other programming information. • Organize and conduct administrative duties as needed including program registration, sending out follow-up materials and preparing reports. • Interact with the public by answering questions about the natural world, programming opportunities, and NJ Audubon. • Assist with the design of brochures, websites and other marketing and communication materials. Membership • Strive to increase NJ Audubon membership base. Community Relations • Represent NJ Audubon in the local community, expanding the organization’s presence to increase local awareness, support and participation. • Develop and promote programs with marketing materials and electronic or social media. Other • Be willing to drive throughout NJ to deliver community based programs. • Attend center, department and NJ Audubon meetings and serve on committees as requested by supervisor. • Obtain satisfactory background check. • Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR and other certification as appropriate. • Participate with other NJ Audubon staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the assigned center. Knowledge and Skills • Interest in and knowledge of New Jersey’s natural and built environments. • Demonstrated understanding of principles of teaching in non-formal settings. • Experience teaching with people of all ages and working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds in an urban setting. • Excellent Computer Skills - Microsoft Office. • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of environmental and conservation issues required. • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines. • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive criticism. • Motivated self-starter with capacity to work productively in a team setting with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude. • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. • Informed and committed to the role that environmental education, conservation and research plays in our society today and its importance for the future. QUALIFICATIONS • B.A. or B.S. in education or the sciences, preferred. • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching in a variety of settings including school, afterschool, nature center, etc. • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet the special needs of the program and organization. • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ; move materials and lift 25 lbs. as needed.
