Field Technician Position In Support of the Kissimmee River Restoration October 7 2021 Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies (FAU/CES) is offering a full-time position (40 hours per week) to provide field and administrative support for the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) Kissimmee River Restoration Evaluation Program. The position is based at the SFWMD Headquarters in West Palm Beach and provides weekly field support for Kissimmee River Restoration (KRR) field research being conducted at the Riverwoods Field Lab in Lorida, Florida. Description: Job responsibilities are split between field support on the Kissimmee River and administrative support at SFWMD Headquarters. Field responsibilities include assisting scientists with field data collection for all research studies including water quality, wetland plant, invertebrate, fish, wading bird and waterfowl communities and geomorphology. Laboratory processing may include water, soil, vegetation, invertebrate or fish samples. Responsibilities include preparation, calibration and cleaning of field sampling equipment, GPS units, boats and trucks. The position will support the Explore the Kissimmee Field Studies Program on an as needed basis. Office responsibilities include assisting with SFWMD fleet (boats, airboats, trucks & UTV’s) scheduling and documenting repairs. Administrative responsibilities include field data entry, report writing (weekly conditions report) and maintaining Endnotes KRR reference library. The position will assist with annual inventory of the Kissimmee Divisions’ assets located at SFWMD Headquarters and at Riverwoods. Training will be provided in vehicle, jon boat and airboat driving and safety in order to operate FAU and SFWMD boats and vehicles. In addition, we provide training in First Aid/CPR and Environmental Health and Safety certifications.
Qualifications: Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel. Experience in field sampling techniques for water quality, aquatic vegetation, invertebrates, fish or wetland birds is highly desired. Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills and proven organizational, time, and self-management skills. Candidates must be able to work extra-long days in the field often in the heat, humidity, rain, and with wildlife such as alligators, snakes and stinging insects. This position frequently requires overnight trips to Riverwoods (accommodations provided) to conduct field studies. A minimum of an Associate’s Degree with 1-year related work experience is required. Term: This is a full-time, OPS position with FAU requiring 40 hours per week and scheduled to start in November 2021. The work responsibilities will be split between the office and field as needed. The salary is based upon experience ranging from $32,000 – $35,000 annually. It is a 1-year contract position with annual renewal based on performance and SFWMD funding.
