The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) seeks a Environmental GIS Technician to join a team mapping vegetative communities for the U.S. Air Force. Under direction from the Project Supervisor and Team Leads, these positions will provide support to an on-going vegetation mapping project, digitize and interpret aerial imagery, develop maps and feature layers for field deployment, manage and prepare field equipment for data collection, identify flora species and vegetative communities, and assist in the development of final deliverable maps and technical documents. This is a position that will require frequent travel to U.S. Air Force installations for field data collection. The Environmental GIS Technician will collaborate as part of a team to complete project objectives.
Qualifications
Required Job Qualifications BS or BA in Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Geography, or related field. Field or course-work experience identifying plants to the species level. Knowledge and/or experience with environmental-related GIS, interpreting aerial imagery, and geospatial technical writing and documentation. Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software and Microsoft Office suite. Demonstrated experience with the US National Vegetation Classification system. Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather and rugged terrain, including navigating backcountry terrain using topographic/satellite maps and GPS. Initiative to resolve issues, a strong attention to detail, superior verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work both independently and with others. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Preferred Job Qualifications A candidate with 1 year of professional experience mapping vegetation to the alliance level of US National Vegetation Classification system is preferred. Additionally, experience identifying flora species in Alaska and that of the Eastern, Midwest, and Southeastern U.S. will be highly valued. Prior experience drafting field species guides as part of a field crew is desired. Familiarity with a wide variety of GPS devices and field data collection equipment and software is preferred. Knowledge of the principles of plant community/landscape ecology system is preferred. Experience working on a military installation is desired.
