California State Parks' Sonoma-Mendocino Coast District currently has two permanent-intermittent Environmental Scientist positions open for applications at https://www.calcareers.ca.gov/. One will be based in Duncans Mills, CA and the other will be based in Mendocino, CA. Both positions will travel and work throughout the Sonoma-Mendocino Coast District. The positions are limited to 1500 hours (~9 months) per year, but there is currently funding to extend these positions to (mostly) year-round on a limited basis if that is desired. Hourly pay currently ranges between $23.91/hr and $45.73/hr. Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in a related field is required.
As a member of the District's Natural Resource Program, these positions will support our Wildfire & Forest Resilience Program and Cannabis Watershed Protection Program through subject matter expertise in wildlife and vegetation. They will conduct biological surveys for protected species (such as Northern spotted owl, marbled murrelet, California red-legged frog, and Behren's/Myrtle's silverspot butterfly), manage protected species planning and permitting, provide biological monitoring for a wide range of projects, and otherwise assist the District with biological project assistance. Potential career development opportunities include volunteer and citizen science management, qualification as a Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO) from prescribed fire projects both within the District and statewide, and qualification as a Resource Advisor (READ) and Fireline Resource Advisor (REAF) from wildfire incidents. Park housing may become available. Both positions are benefitted, including pension.
