BIO-WEST seeks permanent full-time and seasonal/part-time entry-level environmental technicians to assist with field and office work in its Rosenberg (Houston) office. The technicians will assist water resource specialists, wildlife biologists, wetland scientists, botanists, and coastal ecologists. Work will occur throughout Texas in remote areas/wilderness, developed areas (e.g., residential and commercial), and on/diving in water (e.g., streams, rivers, lakes, bays, offshore). The technicians will implement study plans, properly collect data and samples, utilize GPS/GIS/Google Earth and other cartographic technologies, review literature, assist with report preparation, conduct mapping exercises, delineate wetlands, boat, manage daily schedules/activities, and participate on and travel with field crews. The technicians will also maintain safe and optimal working equipment, such as road vehicles, A/UTVs, scientific collection devices, tools, and boats.
When assisting with water quality projects, the technicians will document regulatory compliance of current state- and federally mandated programs, which will require navigating primarily around the greater Houston area to identify participants and collect water samples from residences, businesses, and schools. Some intra-state travel is anticipated. Duties include accurate scheduling, preparing collections, preparing documentation according to protocols, managing data, and conducting polite interactions with customers/homeowners. Ultimately, the technicians will gain environmental regulatory compliance experience and an introduction to many other facets of environmental consulting.
Under the direction of project managers and field crew leaders, the technicians will also conduct wetland delineations according to the USACE 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual and appropriate regional supplement(s). Additional duties will include conducting various other ecological efforts to identify and record specific data to document natural resource conditions and/or compliance with regulatory authorizations/procedures. Examples of these efforts are threatened and endangered species habitat assessments and surveys, bird counts, mortality surveys, construction monitoring, and environmental inspections. The technician is also expected to provide post-field-effort assistance to staff members, write technical reports, safely operate equipment, and maintain field gear.
On coastal projects, the technicians will work under the direction of BIO-WEST Coastal Division staff or its scientific dive team on habitat and ecological mapping projects, primarily along the Gulf Coast. Typical tasks include preparing equipment, tools, and vessels for field efforts; using remote sensing technologies such as side-scan sonar towfish, magnetometer, and subbottom profiler to record and identify oysters, seagrass, anomalies, and substrate; collecting core (subsediment) and sediment samples; processing and georectifying collected data with programs such as ESRI ArcGIS, HYDROpro, and EdgeTech; diving using SCUBA, mask and fins or surface-supplied air compression to collect oysters, mussels; cleaning, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment and tools; and drafting reports, including supportive appendices and documentation, to accurately describe project results.

A BS degree in environmental sciences (e.g., biology, fisheries, wildlife, ecology, chemistry, water quality) is preferred. Relevant field or professional experience, including data analysis and writing, may qualify and be substituted for a degree.
While no experience is required, preference will be given to candidates with practical experience such as wetland characteristics knowledge, GIS/GIS familiarity, local flora and fauna knowledge, boating experience, and/or outdoor recreation hobbies.
Must be able to repeatedly conduct field work in remote outdoor locations for extended periods of time and under extreme conditions in a variety of climates, hike long distances, be aware of and able to respond to hazardous wildlife and other conditions, lift 50–75 pounds, complete ATV and safety training, and work outside of normal business hours including weekends and holidays. Candidates should be in good physical condition, have flexible schedules, able to work in the field approximately 70–80 percent of the time, and travel overnight.

Must possess a valid class C Texas driver’s license, have a satisfactory driving record and permit a review of driving record for the past 3 years, and comply with company drug and alcohol testing policies.
Compensation: Pay commensurate with experience.
