The Equity VISTA will lead and develop programs that engage diverse communities in environmental stewardship of the Rock Creek watershed, focusing on the east side of the park with historically less equitable park access. These opportunities will allow community members to deeply and authentically explore their connections to their natural areas through stewardship. These outreach efforts may include tabling, attending community events, leading hikes, and otherwise representing the Conservancy to promoting stewardship practices and equitable park access.
Member Duties : The VISTA will support justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) efforts at the Conservancy, including researching the history of race equity in DC and throughout the Rock Creek watershed, particularly as those histories related to Rock Creek Park and other natural spaces. This research will support the development of programming around the Racial History of DC, an educational project done in partnership with the National Park Service. The VISTA will enhance the Conservancy’s ability to reach marginalized communities, particularly those most vulnerable to climate change and environmental racism, engaging community members in education and service opportunities. The VISTA will organize virtual learning, field trips, STEM classroom integration, and other educational efforts with local schools and young people residing on the east side of the park, who have historically lacked access to the park.
