New Mexico Wildlife Center (NMWC) is located just north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has been in continuous operation since 1986. Our mission statement is: New Mexico Wildlife Center connects people and wildlife for an abundant tomorrow. There are three main facets to NMWC: a Wildlife Hospital, Wildlife Education programs, and our onsite native wildlife exhibits that are open to the public daily. Our annual operating budget has been steadily climbing in recent years as the organization has experienced significant growth. Last year’s budget was approximately $650,000. In 2020, the Wildlife Hospital treated 994 injured and orphaned animals representing more than 130 different species. The Education Team provides wildlife education presentations for schools and other groups that meet national science standards. While many of our presentations were virtual in 2020, most years we present between 100-200 in-person education programs, a majority of which include our Ambassador Animals. Nearly 40 native wild animals reside at NMWC and are on exhibit for the nearly 3,000 annual visitors. In addition to annual events like World Migratory Bird Day and Open House, the Education Team also offers hourly Animal Encounters programs for visitors during the summer months. Volunteers and a professional staff (8 full-time, 2 part-time) provide the highest standards of husbandry and training for all resident animals and hospital patients daily. The Executive Director is responsible for managing the staff and supervising the 20-acre facility, interacting with the many volunteers, maintaining all permits and licenses, working with the Board of Directors to develop annual budget and provide strategic direction for the organization, fundraising to meet budget targets, and representing the Center to state and federal agencies, the public, and partner conservation programs.
Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree required, although significant experience may substitute for education. • At least eight years of upper-level management experience in a related organization • Proven experience in nonprofit fundraising including effective experience in marketing, and donor and media relations • At least two years of experience in one of the following: wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife education, and/or exhibition of wildlife • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead teams of diverse interests and backgrounds in a positive manner • Demonstrated written communication skills • Robust verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak publicly about issues facing wildlife and their habitats • Ability to formulate and communicate an organizational vision, translating strategic concepts into daily operations • Experience in basic facility management and operations Desired Skills: • Five years of experience working with and leading volunteers is preferred • At least five years of experience in one of the following: wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife education, and/or exhibition of wildlife is strongly preferred • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred • Successful grant-writing experience and experience with a donor database is strongly preferred NMWC offers a competitive salary with health care benefits.
