Both facilities in Tavernier, FL. 33070 Job Title: Executive Director Reports To: Board of Directors Exemption Status: Exempt Salary Range: $60,000 – $80,000 Mission Statement: The mission of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species. Job Summary: The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit seeking a determined, self-motivated leader to take on the role of Executive Director with our organization. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills. As the Executive Director, this position acts as a bridge between the Board of Directors and the staff of the Wild Bird Center, ensuring a cohesive team with a unified mission. Applicants must have strong fundraising and administrative skills and a proven track record of success with grants and donors. As a small nonprofit, the Bird Center needs a Director who is an active leader capable of pursuing prospective donors and other funding opportunities with determination. Essential Duties: • Represent the organization in professional and social capacities by championing the organization's mission and values. • Oversee operations of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary and Mission Wild Bird Hospital. • Maintain a highly effective hospital and rehabilitation service for native and migratory wild birds. • Orchestrate successful fundraising campaigns for capital projects and operational needs through use of targeted appeal strategies. • Protect assets through maintaining insurance, record-keeping, financial security practices and audits. • Expand fundraising by identifying new sources of income and diversifying revenue sources. • Adhere to (and enforce adherence to) policies and procedures for human resources, internal operations, safety, and protection of assets. • Plan and execute annual operating budget; collaborate with the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee to approve an annual budget prior to the start of the fiscal year. • Identify and interpret annual, quarterly, and monthly trends in revenue. Utilize trends to anticipate future financial outcomes and develop fundraising strategies. • Develop valuable relationships with fellow nonprofits and institutions of higher learning. • Foster positive relationships with high-level donors and private foundations; Negotiate large financial contributions. • Manage donor relationships, including acquisition of new donors and strengthening of existing donor relationships. • Research and pursue grant opportunities; manage grant-funded projects and reporting. • Present monthly reports to the Board of Directors pursuant to Governing Policies. • Create successful fundraising campaigns and pursue grant opportunities. • Supervise and lead a team of staff to accomplish duties including hospital operations, sanctuary operations, facilities maintenance, community outreach and education, financial management, and fundraising. • Establish salaries and benefits for employees while complying with all applicable labor laws and policies. • Plan and host in-person and virtual fundraising events on behalf of the Bird Center. • Collaborate with media, law enforcement, environmental agencies, educators and scientists to promote the conservation of native wildlife. • Advocate for the financial needs of the Bird Center to potential donors and the community in a manner that is professional, compelling, and sincere. • Oversee all federal, state, and local agency reporting, including Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Department of Agriculture. Maintain compliance in all these areas. • Act as Human Resources for the organization, adhering to labor laws, enacting staff reviews and reprimands, keeping incident report forms on incidents or near-misses, etc. Other Duties: • Lead staff in planning for and responding to emergencies, especially as it relates to hurricanes and storm surges. • Build a reputation and network within the local community through involvement with community organizations, including attendance at Chambers of Commerce luncheons and Rotary Club meetings. • Respond to the public’s curiosity about the organization, including educating the public on the organization’s mission, values, bird and wildlife advice, conservation topics, etc. • Handle difficult situations with members of the public with professionalism and kindness, while upholding the organization’s mission. Difficult situations include members of the public in illegal possession of wildlife, working with FWC and law enforcement on animal cruelty cases, redirecting individuals attempting to utilize FKWBC as a veterinary clinic (or as a rehoming service for their pets) to other contacts and appropriate resources. • Have a strong understanding of and capability for human resource management, financial management, and fundraising through grants and appeals.

Minimum Requirements: • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, financial management, or a comparable degree. • 3 years or more of experience in a wildlife rehabilitation or animal care setting or in a successful 501(c)(3) nonprofit fundraising position. • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills a must. • Expert organization skills and time management skills. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Excel. Tech savvy preferred. Experience with or ability to quickly learn the following websites or computer programs: Quickbooks Online, Dext (Receipt Bank), Bloomerang, Paychex Flex/Intuit, Zoom, and various state and federal agency online portals. • Ability to lift over 50 pounds. • Must be able to move around in the hospital and sanctuary facilities, sometimes in difficult terrain. • Ability to work safely in extreme heat or other inclement weather conditions. • Valid driver’s license in the State of Florida and clean driving record. **(Start date is not firm, but sooner rather than later start dates are ideal.)
