We are seeking a motivated, organized, independent and enthusiastic individual to direct our interpretive center, Orcas W.I.L.D. (Wildlife Institute for Learning & Discovery). This position is full time and salaried DOE. The successful applicant must be available starting March 1st. The position requires a year-long contract renewable based on performance.
General overview of the Center: Orcas W.I.L.D. is an interpretive center/museum in the town of Eastsound on Orcas Island, right in the heart of the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Our main objective in founding this center is to create an educational space where visitors and residents of the island can glean knowledge of our diverse ecosystem here in the San Juan Islands and surrounding areas. Orcas W.I.L.D. promotes awareness of programs and happenings relevant to our community via informational and interactive displays on topics such as the Southern Resident Orca population, intertidal species, natural history of the area and much more. We consider ourselves to be the intersection where science, education, and community outreach meet to promote a deeper understanding and subsequent conservation of our natural environment and its irreplaceable inhabitants.
While working in the center, responsibilities include operating the museum gift shop, setting up kayak rentals in town and maintaining the touch tank and aquarium while overseeing children interacting with the animals and other various displays.
The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The Director will be expected to manage a team of Marine Naturalists and Volunteers that will work in the center. The Director will be expected to create and enforce organizational protocols as well as set scheduling.
-Managing interactive displays including a touch tank
-Creating and enforcing seasonal protocols

-Organize events to involve the community in educational outreach
-Strong leadership skills

-Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and strong work ethic
-Flexibility and open to an often unpredictable schedule
-Completed BS or above in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
-Valid driver’s license
-Subject to random drug testing
-CPR and First Aid Certified (before arrival)
-Able to lift 25 lbs (capable of handling merchandise, assisting with kayak rentals, etc.)
-Able to stand for 6 hours
-Able to communicate and work effectively with customers on the phone and in person
-Able to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
