Description
The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society in the College of Forestry is soliciting applications for two (2) Faculty Research Assistants as part of a collaborative project being led by Dr. Jim Rivers (http://people.forestry.oregonstate.edu/jim-rivers/) in cooperation with Dr. Matt Betts (OSU Dept. Forest Ecosystems & Society), Dr. Dan Roby (USGS and OSU Dept. Fisheries and Wildlife), and Kim Nelson (OSU Dept. Fisheries and Wildlife). This position will provide leadership and support to ongoing research investigating space use, habitat selection, and breeding ecology of the threatened Marbled Murrelet in western Oregon. It involves planning and coordinating technical aspects of field research, being stationed near research sites on the Oregon Coast and participating in field work from April-September, and assisting with the hiring, supervising, and managing of seasonal field crews. This position will also lead data management and provide support for data analysis and manuscript preparation associated with the project. Support is available for a minimum of 1 year subject to adequate performance review after 12 months. Candidates should be able to start the position in early January 2019. Each Faculty Research Assistant will be responsible for several project components that include but are not limited to: 1. At-sea banding and tagging of Marbled Murrelets 2. Aerial- and ground-based radio-telemetry along the coast and in the Coast Range forests 3. Murrelet dawn surveys and nest searching 4. Avian predator point counts 5. Nest monitoring activities including installation and maintenance of audio, video, and radio-telemetry recording equipment 6. Leading the collection of behavioral data from video obtained from nest cameras 7. Writing, updating, and following data collection and safety protocols 8. Managing large datasets and preparing data for analysis 9. Inventory and maintenance of field equipment and lab samples
Qualifications
Minimum/ Required Qualifications - B.S. degree in wildlife ecology or a closely related field - Supervisory experience and ability to effectively lead research teams - Professional competence in executing and conducting research - Strong verbal and written communication skills that allows for working effectively as a member of a large research team - Must possess a valid driver’s license - Computing skills including statistical software (e.g., R), spatial software (e.g., ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, Google Earth), and database programs - Previous experience handling and banding/tagging birds, as well as obtaining biological samples - Ability to traverse steep, rugged, and/or uneven terrain while carrying up to 50 pounds in all weather conditions. Preferred Qualifications - Previous experience working with seabirds, particularly Marbled Murrelets - Previous experience deploying electronics used in wildlife studies such as audio playback/recording units, nest cameras, and automated telemetry systems - Previous experience with aerial- and ground-based radio-telemetry - Demonstrated competence conducting field data collection from boats and/or small aircraft - Knowledge and experience with forest management practices of the Pacific Northwest - M.S. degree in wildlife ecology or closely related field - A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity Application Instructions: For additional details about the position, including how to apply, visit the application web site (http://oregonstate.edu/jobs/) and search for posting number P02562UF.
