Paragon Whitetails is offering a fall internship for college students between September 1st and December 1st with the possibility of extension. Paragon is an up-and-coming whitetail deer breeding facility located in Trinity, Texas (~30 minutes East of Huntsville). Our operation focuses on premiere pedigrees and marketability of whitetail deer in the deer breeding industry. Interns will be able to learn about all facets of the thriving and growing whitetail deer breeding industry. This internship will focus on teaching all aspects of the industry through hands-on skills in deer herd health and management. Interns will work alongside full-time staff and will be thoroughly trained. Upon completion of this internship, interns will be well versed in: • General and medical care of deer; all age groups • Deer anatomy and husbandry • Overall deer management practices • Be exposed to deer pedigrees, valuations, and marketability Duties to include but not limited to: • Bottle raising and socialization with whitetail fawns • Cleaning / maintaining ranch facilities • Assisting in weaning and vaccination • General ranch work • Assisting in veterinary work • Assisting in record keeping Assisting in semen collection and artificial insemination Assisting in recipient doe synchronization and embryo transfer Assisting in antler cutting and buck processing
Qualifications
• First and foremost – love working with animals and passionate about animal husbandry • Reliable and committed to a 14 week FULL time program • Punctual • Ready to work long days in the HOT/HUMID (some days are upwards of 12-14 hr days) in unpredictable Texas Weather • Self-starter • Flexible and open minded • Strong desire to work hands on with deer • Physically fit (able to handle 50 lbs feed bags) • Patience with wild / unpredictable animals • Team Player • Able to follow directions and be detail oriented • Good attitude / good communication skills This is a full-time position (7 days a week) for a 14 week period with long hours and limited time off. Long days are often the norm and in the Texas heat. The start and end dates are flexible starting after September 1st and ending in late November/early December.
